Hi,
Is there an installable version of debian that already has speakup installed into it, or do I have to install lenny and then patch speakup into it.
If the latter, what is the best method for doing the patching, (into the kernel, or as modules)?
assuming I get speakup installed, if I want to use a software synth like espeak, do I then need speech-dispatcher and espeakup, or is there a better way to run it?

The standard Lenny installer has speakup support through modules. You
just need to pass the speakup.synth=something parameter to the installer
at boot, or use a script I made to patch ISO images.

espeakup removes the need for speech-dispatcher.

I'm not sure, but I think you can install Debian with Speakup if you own
a hardware synth. But you shut chekc this out on teh Debian sites to be
sure.

If you are not a very experienced user, I would suggest to install the
modules after having set up Lenny.

If you want to use Espeak, you have the choice:
While Espeakup seems to be more performant, you have to stick to one
synth.
With Speech-Dispatcher you are more flexible, but there might be issues
especially when you use its native Espeakup module.
But you can change the synth, for example to one of the commercial ones,
or you can use the free Festival, provided you like it.
You also can use Espeak-Generic instead of Espeak, which is pretty
stable with SD.
Note: When using Speakup with SD, you need speechd-up.

Hi
You might like to check out vinux 2.0 alpha 2 with my audio walk-through
of using the remastersys-installer. It's not as flexible as other
installers but will suit most requirements.

Hi,
I am new to Speakup and Linux in general. I've installed Debian Jessie,
and for some reason, when I Press ctrl+Alt+F1-6, Speakup doesn't talk.
My current setup is a s follows:
I have Espeakup installed and /etc/init.d/espeakup status reports that
it is active. Also, in /etc/modules.conf I have the line:
speakup_soft
However, it doesn't talk, as I said. Am I missing something obvious
here?
Thanks,
Sukil

First thing I would check if I have sound in the console.
Then using lsmod, that speakup_soft indeed was loaded.
Then using ps that espeakup is actually running.

Hi,
If I type `espeak "hi"` in a console, I only get sound as a normal
user. I have also followed the other instructions and have checked that
speakup_soft is loaded and that espeakup is enabled, without specifying
any TTY or rather "?". I still get no sound.
Thanks,
Sukil

Do you also have a GUI desktop with orca installed? If yes, you may be
running into the problem where speech-dispatcher grabs the sound card
through pulseaudio, and doesn't give espeakup access to it through
alsa. I haven't used pulse in a long time, so don't recall exactly how
to check this.
If this is the case, you can edit speech-dispatcher's config file, and tell it
not to use pulse. I believe there's also a way to get espeakup and
speech-dispatcher to play nicely with pulse, but someone else will
have to cover that, assuming my recall of this being possible is
correct.
