mini-beep.iso seems obsoleted already

Hi,

Samuel, or anyone, can you tell me whether mini-beep.iso has been
updated since the Lenny archives now contain kernel 2.6.26 as the
default? I had a couple of very nice installs with the iso before
2.6.26 was added to the archives, but afterward the installer complains
that no modules are available for my kernel version, which I take to be
2.6.25. I am advised to install another Debian distribution, but would
rather stay with Lenny.

What to do?

I don't know if the iso has been updated or not, but a new install was 
just done on a machine here with no problem.  It installed the 2.6.26 
kernel.  What if you do a normal install and manually build Speakup 
modules or try to apt-cache search speakup-modules?  You could also 
install speakup-source and build your own that way.  The machine didn't 
have speech and wouldn't need Speakup, but the actual install itself was 
fine.

The currently available mini-beep.iso is identical to the one I
downloaded when Samuel originally posted it, so I'm sure it has not
been updated.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm a little nervous about ending up
with a system that might not boot. I'm trying to avoid the need to
compile my own, too, so maybe patience is the policy to follow here.

Samuel says on his home page that since daily builds of mini.iso  are
now available, he is not going to update his own. That's entirely
reasonable, but I have no braille display, and speakup is not yet
included in the daily builds. 

Thanks also for your experience with the ltlk synth. I'm sure I was
misinterpreting the failure of the device with a frozen computer. I
won't be so quick to reboot next time the device quits talking.

Hello Samuel, Chuck et al,

	Does anyone have a date (or idea of when)speakup will be included in the daily build? Or, barring that an updated mini-beep.iso with current kernel and speakup included?

	I'm at the point where I have to do a new install on a couple of machines. Without sighted assistance, I want speakup to be available during, and after, the install. As it appears, I can either install with Shane's old netinst cd and go throught the aptitude upgrade process to lenny, or wait for a new accessible installer.

  Hi Chuck and all.

When I installed debian on my power pc, in order to do an install with 
brltty, I had to use a cd that had been specially created with the version 
of brltty that works correctly with power pc; this had not yet been 
implemeneted in the installers--in fact, I think it still might not be 
implemented. at any rate, with tht cd, I ran into the same problem of 
modules not being available. I ended up having to keep switching mirrors 
until I found one that had those modules; initially I kept changing when 
certain modules couldn't be found but eventually I found one mirror that 
had them all. You might be able to do the same thing with the 
mini-beep.iso; when it complains about missing modules, go back and change 
your mirror and keep doing this until you find one that has your modules. 
This would be a temporary fix until the iso is updated.

You are brilliant! Many thanks! I kept trying servers as you suggested,
and found one that did the trick. I suppose the one I found might not
work that way forever, but for those who are hoping to do the same, it
was the eighth selection in the U.S. group of servers.

Hi,

I've never had this problem or anything similar, but perhaps it's the 
mirror I use.  The two mirrors that I use and recommend always seem to 
be current.  Generally when there is a major upgrade to stable, they 
have everything within hours, at least by the time I do aptitude 
update.  In order of preference, they are:

http://linux.csua.berkeley.edu/debian/

ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/

Note that http://mirrors.kernel.org/ is a lot slower for me and doesn't 
always connect.  I sometimes have problems with linux.csua.berkeley.edu 
but not often.  In the mini-beep install menu, I use option 20 from the 
choose mirror menu.  Note that I am in California, US and those mirrors 
might not be the fastest or closest for you, especially if you're in 
another country.  If in doubt, you can use http.us.debian.org or similar 
for your country code which is recommended.

mini-beep iso. The idea is that the kernel version used by the installer 
and its matching modules are no longer current so many mirrors would have 
gotten rid of them. So one would be looking for a mirror with old modules, 
not necessarily the most up-to-date mirror.

That's exactly right. After finding a server that still had modules
matching the 2.6.25 kernel and getting started that way, I switched
back to another server I prefer to use, and found about 80 MB of
updates not available from the one I started with. Some mirrors are
better than others, and it's a poor mirror one needs to get started
with the mini-beep.iso.

Ah, that makes sense.  OK, can you put in a custom mirror?  I don't know 
because I've never tried.  If so, look at http://snapshots.debian.net/.  
You can give any date for the past several years and find old modules 
that way.  I haven't actually used it but read about it here when people 
were having ALSA problems.  I looked at the site and you can either go 
by date or release.  Each date has its own set of sources.list entries 
that you would add.  You could go back to 2008-08-01 for example.  
Again, I've only looked, not actually used it.
