Hello all. Recently I've upgraded to 2.6.26 on one of these machines.
Turns out that the Cirus Logic 46XX module wasn't included in the Debian
package. Wonder if I should file a bug against this? Reason why I ask is
that the description for the Linux-image-2.6.26-686 package states that it
includes all supported drivers as modules. I've verified that the
previous kernel does include the required module though.

Err, how was that module called? I can't find anything looking like 46xx
in 2.6.18 or 2.6.24 either.

As the speakup fix did not go into the 2.6.27 kernel, would it be safe to
do the speakup patch and rebuild of the kernel the old way?
TIA, Willem

Hi their. Sorry I wasn't clearer here. The module in question, which is
contained in the 2.6.18-speakup enabled package is the SND_cs46xx module.
Here is the info from /sbin/modinfo. This should help you out.

Ah, ok, Cirrus now makes sound boards :)
See the debian 2.6.23 changelog:
* Remove binary only firmwares for:
...
- Cirrus Logic (Sound Fusion) CS4280/CS461x/CS462x/CS463x
I.e. Debian dropped the driver because there are parts of it (the
firmware) which are not free. That is not likely to change until the
firmware gets freed.

Hi their. I'm a little confused here. According to the driver, its
released under the GPL. In any event, what's the best way to get the
device functional under this new kernel? I see their's a alsa-source
ppackage here, but not sure if the binary firmware was removed.

The driver part, yes, but the firmware part is not.

Hi their. Seeing that the firmware portions are binary only, what's the
easiest way to get the board up and running under 2.6.26? I'm of course
familiar with kernel compilations, so doing so wouldn't be a problem at
all. Wish they would of course made the firmware open source, but untill
this happens )we hope?) guess I have no choice.
