mlb, nfl and iceweasel

I'm just wondering whether anybody has gotten either mlb gameday audio or
nfl field pass to work with iceweasel and orca this year. The reason I'm
asking is that I'm finding I can navigate both sites much more successfully
now than ever before. On the mlb site, I got all the way to the media
player window but couldn't find the login and didn't know if there was any
program that would play if I did manage to log in. with nfl I've gotten
all the way to the combo boxes to choose the desired audio feed for a game
but couldn't figure out how to get into and select from the combo box;
again, didn't know if there would be a program that would work to play the
audio if I did get there. Of course, I now have several other
alternatives for listening to games but I keep hoping that eventually I
can do these things with linux. If anybody has succeeded with either nfl
or mlb or has gotten further than I have, I'd appreciate knowing what you
did.

Hi all.

On nfl I just got through the login and it said it was dowloading the ram
file but unfortunately I don't have realplayer on here. Is there an
up-to-date realplayer for linux?

Not sure what the status is with realplayer on linux these days, but I 
used to listen to games with NFL Field Pass and they used to mute the 
audio during the commercials. This was really annoying because you could 
miss some of the game if you lose the connection during the silence and 
aren't aware of it in time to reestablish the connection before the game 
resumes. Worse yet, occasionally they would be late in unmuting the sound 
and you would miss part of the game. This happened to me more than once 
during the final minute of the game when a team was driving down the 
field!

This was a few years ago, so maybe it has gotten better since then. I 
listen to the games on Sirius now and don't have any problems. You still 
have the option of listening online with Sirius, but I've never actually 
tried it, so I don't know how accessible it is.

As for field pass, it is better. Also, they play some kind of irritating
music during commercials.

Yes, I can do field pass on the Mac and windows and sirius but I keep
watching for it to work on linux. I finally dug out a realplayer for ppc
and it appeared to install and shows up in the Applications menu. But
when I tried game links it showed the title of the game and said
"inaccessible" and when I tried a .m3u and a .ram file they didn't play
though I didn't get	o errors--well, it said something about "grayed
out" on the ram file. However, when I added some gstreamer plugins, totem
picked up the m3u and ram file. But still no go with nfl.

I do have to say that I am impressed with Orca's progress although I
haven't been very impressed with the progress of gui screenreaders for
linux up till now. I can finally really navigate iceweasel and get some
results: listening to a church service and radio stations and even
accessing my online banking.

There is a project for a silverlight equivalent which might help with mlb,
but you have to compile the media codecs (Moonlight) and I can' find some
of what's listed in debian. I also find I'm a bit handicapped because I'm
using ppc; for instance, there's no adobe flash player for linux ppc and
live365 keeps sending me to the linux player installation page for the
non-ppc version. But the only Intel machine I have that could be
commandeered for linux is being used for something else right now.
However, I do overall see improvement.

Is there a lot of difference between iceweasel and firefox? I've made
attempts to install firefox but failed so right now I'm just using
iceweasel.

What version of realplayer are you trying to use? Iirc, you can get 
source for some kind of linux realplayer 10 on 
helixcommunity.org...might be worth a look.

Well, I've installed realplayer
10.0.5.756-linux-2.2-libc6-gcc32-powerpc.bin and I then also installed
from debian helix-player 1.0.8-2 and helix-mozilla (same version). so far
none of these appear to work; realplayer opens but doesn't play the files
and I get the game titles in nfl but "inaccessible"; helix gives me a
"missing components" error. Totem does play the real media files but
doesn't appear to work with nfl. The problem with mlb at present is that
it shows the media player window but does not give access to the login
screen--a problem I've also sometimes experienced in Windows with Internet
Explorer. Maybe somebody on the orca list will have gotten further with
this; will probably try subscribing and posting here.

Hi,

I would suggest joining the Orca list as this really isn't on topic for 
Speakup.  Speakup is designed for the console, not the GUI.  Yes, there 
is a "free" player called Helix which is the RealPlayer equivalent for 
Linux.  I don't know if it's really free or not and I'm pretty sure that 
Debian doesn't package it.  Look for helix or helixplayer.  I don't 
remember the site offhand but try helixplayer.org or similar.  You might 
have to build from source.  Since you're on a Mac, why not just get 
RealPlayer for OS X which might also run Helix?  You could just download 
the ram file and play it from the Mac side.  I haven't used any GUI 
RealPlayer in Linux at all and the last TRPlayer I used I think only 
worked with RealPlayer 8 or 7.  Also, MPlayer might work as I think it 
can use the Real codecs.  Try installing the win32-codecs package from 
http://debian-multimedia.org/ or from Ubuntu as Debian won't officially 
support them because they are non-free.  Also try helix-player.org or of 
course Google.  I don't know if debian-multimedia ships Real/Helix or 
not, I've not looked.

explore Orca though.

As for this being offtopic, if I decide to continue with orca I may
subscribe to that list. But I knew some people on this list used Orca and
thought somebody might have succeeded with nfl or mlb.

Cheryl,

Totem can work with real player files if you have the right codecs 
installed. There's also a mozilla plugin for totem that I think will 
embed it into the browser for things like nfl and mlb.
