Well, on a machine at home I am having the problem that linux insists that
I don't have a cable connected when it most certainly is connected. I
have tried it through a router and the cable modem, both with no success.
I suppose I'll have to try my WINDOWS xp machine I have dedicated to
Kurzweil Reader.
Take Care,
Jim

Hi. What do you maen by 'insists thet the cable is not connected'? Do you get a message stating as such? Do you not get any responses back from your router's, or ISPs DHCP server? Can you not
ping your router, even after you get an IP from it? I apologize I can't be of more help; however, if you provide more specifics of what exactly is going on/symptoms you experience, perhaps
myself or someone on the list here can help. Hope the above questions point you in the right direction at least.

He could try and ping the machine itself. 127.0.0.0

Yes, he could do that, but by doing so, he'd be pinging his loopback
interface, which would in no way help him diagnose his ethernet card
problem. Assuming his ethernet card gets an IP assigned to it, he
could then ping that IP, thus testing the functionality of the
ethernet card.

I was just assuming that he was saying that he couldn't connect, and
therefore didn't have an IP address assigned.

Right, and based on what he's told us thus far, you and I were assuming
the same thing. Like I said, assuming his ethernet card gets an IP
assigned to it, (I.E. he configures a static one manually), he can
then ping that ip to see if the card itself works. I was also pointing
out however that pinging his loopback interface as you describe
wouldn't help him in solving his ethernet card problems. One could
ping the loopback interface even without a ethernet card or modem
installed in the system, and one would still get responses to the ping
from the loopback interface.

Hi to the list,
I did ping 127.0.0.1 though I knew that wasn't of any real help. No, I
never get to the dhcp server. It tells me that the link is missing. The
regular rtl8139 module 8139too is loaded. I can't even ping my regular
router. It thinks there is no cable. However, the WINDOWS machine works
fine.

If you can ping the loop back address that just means that the TCP/IP stack
is propperly installed. Go to a command prompt in windows and type
ipconfig. then ping your IP address. If that works chances are the network
card is okay. If you can't ping the router, that might be a cabling
problem, try another cable.

You said in another message that you ended up taking the computer to
the store, so you might have your problem resolved one way or the
other. However, if you still do have the ethernet issue, then I'd
suggest assigning a static IP to that interface, and pinging that
IP. If it works, then most likely the card is fine.
