Hi everyone,
I apologise if this has been covered before, but I've only just joined
this list, and I haven't found anything helpful on the net so far.
I recently had debian 3.1 and speakup installed on my machine, and speakup
crashes unrecoverably when I try to use mark and paste. So I'm wondering
if this is a known problem and, if so, how have people fixed it?
Thanks for any ideas.
Amanda

There was a version of speakup that had this problem, with a particular
kernel version. I can't remember what version it was however. If you can
tell us your kernel version, that may help.
As to fixing it, the best way is to upgrade the kernel and speakup.

Hi, You need to upgrade your kernel from people.debian.org/~shane the
latest version is 2.6.18 and it does not have this problem. I had this
same problem and fixed it by upgrading kernels. I would uninstall the
old kernel before installing the new one as that old one is very buggy
compaired to today's kernels. 2.6.18 also supports lots more hardware
or at least has better support then 2.6.8 You can add this lines to your
/etc/apt/sources.list file so you can use apt-get to download and
install the kernel
I am using the cut and paste commands to send you these lines, remember
after adding them run apt-get update to allow apt-get to download the list
of packages.
deb http://people.debian.org/~shane/speakup/kernel/ ./
deb-src http://people.debian.org/~shane/speakup/kernel/ ./

uname -r says:
2.6.8-2-speakup
and uname -v says:
#1 Fri Jun 10 14:17:01 PDT 2005
Does this help? I am very very new to admin stuff.

Yes, and that sounds about right.
As Nick said in another message, a kernel upgrade is needed. He has
pointed out where to go to get the new packages.
Any more questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Hi, Usually they only make a new iso when a new stable version of debian is
released. Debian was going to release the next version etch in December of
2006 but they fell behind and are having problems with their new debian
installer from what I have read on the internet using google. When
installing from the iso I used linux26 to have the 2.6 kernel instead of the
2.4 kernel because 2.6 is newer then 2.4 and I wanted the latest kernel
during installation. As far as I know you first need to install from the
iso then upgrade to the newest kernel 2.6.18 which is much better. This is
the proper list for these types of questions as most of us use speakup in
some shape or form so can help out new people.

Would there happen to be an ISO immage of that version about? I have
a 3.1 version as well but would like a cd with the newest one to just
start from rite off the bat. Better than having to download
everything every time I want to install on a new machine.
I am also kind of new to both linux and this list, so, forgive me if
I am off topic.
From what I have read throughout this list, I take it that if you
download the immages from the debian sight, they do not come with
speakup, so, what is the better option?
Thanks.
