Is speech built into the ubunto dvd download? Where do I find docs on how
to uset his distro as a blind user? I honestly didn't pay much attention
until yesterday when I read it could be run as a cd wtihout doing an install
of linux directly onto a system.

I found this dvd on a finland archive. I have since gotten the united states
archive to work, and am downloading the 6.1 release. If I need a special
distribution for speech, let me know, but I assume it's part of the normal
cd download. Also, if there is a dvd that gives me more apps without having
to install on my hard drive, I'd love to know that as well.

Hi,
If you hear the startup sound but Orca isn't
speaking, it probably means f5 wasn't pressed
soon enough to access the menu and choose
accessibility. No big deal. Once you hear the
startup sound, just do the following.
Press alt-f2, type orca and press enter. Orca
will ask a couple of questions, and once you've
answered those you'll be told you need to log out
and back in again for the accessibility flag to
be initialized. Press control-alt-backspace to
log out. The cd will log you in again
automatically, so once you hear the startup sound
again, just press alt-f2, type orca and press
enter. After that, you should be good to go.

I'll try once more.
For now, when I hear the startup sound, I hit alt-f2, type
Orca <enter>
And nothing happens.
Someone mentioned that soundcards get muted sometimes. Could this happen
after the startup sound? That doesn't make much sense to me, but fitured I'd
ask.

Michael,
I noticed that you've capitalized Orca when
specifying what you typed at the run prompt. It
should actually be lower case. I can't count the
number of times I've either capitalized something
that shouldn't have been or not done so when I should have, smile.
Hope this helps,

You noticed I capitolized orca. This might be the problem, but a more
likely solution is that I noticed that I didn't understand the layout of the
webpage. I am using the 6.0, not the 6.1 release.
I feel like a complete dork.
Let me download the proper image, and try again.

I would not have thought that sound would be muted after the start-up sound.
How long are you waiting for orca, things don't happen instantly when
running from CD, possibly a few seconds (time may vary on different speed CD
drives and computers). While on the bit regarding speed of operations, do
you wait for the CD to stop spinning, as it might be another short time
(again varies) before the desktop is fully loaded for you to press f2 and
type Orca. Should you do this early, well it doesn't do anything.
I know that it has been reported before (and from experience one of my
laptop or desktop, can't remember which) don't stop spinning the CD at the
boot menu (where you press f5) to set Orca to be loaded automatically, you
can use a couple of seconds after the CD starts as a guide if it doesn't
stop should you wish to try pressing f5 and that way.
I know from experience, multiple sound cards can be confusing, to know which
ubuntu is going to use, but if you are getting the start-up sound, then you
must have the default sound card sorted, and I would have thought that Orca
would use that.

Does normally help having the right version.
Not getting at you, but just goes to show checking you have everything
correct helps. Also that why it is sometimes useful to give the version of
anything you are having difficulty with.

I can tell you that for some reason ubuntu (I'm now using the feisty live
cd0 doesn't get my sblive soundcard settings right. Seems like it does
unmute everything necessary but there's one surround setting that has to
have the volume turned up for it to work. I end up having to just let
everything boot up normally, then I switch to a console and start brltty,
then I go into alsamixer and fix that setting. After that I can start
ubuntu.

I have only been using the ubuntu cd for one day.
When I want to shut off the computer, the only way I have found to do it is
with the power button.
Is there a proper shut down command that can be initiated by a keyboard
shortcut?
Also I did alt-f1 to get an application list, but can't find any sort of
file browser. Is there a way to run one?

I usually go to a console by doing ctrl-alt-f1. Then I type
shutdown -h now
except I can't remember whether I have to use sudo or not. If just the
plain command above doesn't work, do it as:
sudo shutdown -h now
The cd tray will eventually pop open; remove the cd and hit enter.
You can also do this if you want to remove the cd and reboot your machine
instead of turning it of, but you do -r instead of -h.
There probably is a way to do this from within the gui too but using the
console is what I'm used to doing so I haven't so far tried anything else.
