Hi, I am trying to remove the old kernel 2.6.17-speakup-686 stuff from my
system. The kernel is no longer on my system but other files from that
package are still there. I removed the old modules and initrd image but
still there are other files such as scripts that did not get removed.
What command can I use with apt-get to remove all traces of packages and
not just leave the configurations behind?

apt-get --purge remove linux-image-2.6.17-speakup-686
I think is the proper command. An easier command that I use all the
time is:
aptitude purge linux-image-2.6.17-speakup-686

Then there is this one, even more foolproof:
dpkg -P package-name

try using removepkg
go in to your /var/log/packages directory
and type removepkg linux-2.6.17*
that might work

You are giving a slackware command to someone who is using a
debian-based system. While he didn't explicitly state he's using
debian or a derivative, his mention of apt-get provides that fact.
