Hello. I realize that this is off topic for this list, but
people ask all kinds of Linux questions on this list, so I
figured that it would be OK for me to ask this. Has anybody
successfully used Scanimage and Gocr to scan and read a
printed document? I was trying to do this yesterday, but
Gocr prints a little bit of the document and some garbage.
As an example of what happens, I'll tell you the steps that
I go through then show you the result.
The commands are below.
scanimage --resolution=300 >test.pnm
gocr -i test.pnm -f ASCII
Heres what I get with the document.
(PICTURE)c(PICTURE) o ? E x T I o x B u (?) (?) (PICTURE)E T

ven(0x20ac)ion of the Nationa(?) Federation char

What am I doing wrong? I'm using Linux version 2.6.11.8 and
Sane version 1.0.13. Thanks for your help.

To: Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
Hello,
I have also had very little success with this, and recieved similar results.
I have also tried ocrad and also got the same. I don't know if it is the way
the image is got, or if it is the OCR software that is the problem. I would
also like to know if anyone can do successful OCR.
