Hmmm, I wasn't aware that gnu/linux only runs on particular hard
drives. Yes, harmless slip up, I know, but a newby might google in
vain for gnu/linux-supported hds.

I suppose it depends on what you want to do with your computer. As for
using with Speakup Modified Fedora, you'll probably want to make sure
you have a serial port.

OK, I thought of one more thing. Get a bios that supports booting from
USB device, like a memory stick. Make sure that you can put the USB
first in your boot order, and that no keyboarding is required to invoke
booting from USB.
It's not essential, but it is very convenient to boot from a memory
stick for installation or if you have booting issues.

particular interest in additional devices? For what tasks? At what price
range.
For example, are you looking to do professional level audio work,
perhaps with something like the RME 9652?
The www.alsa-project.org site maintains a db of supported audio devices.
It's worth checking there if you want to go beyond the basic sound that
ships with mother boards.
Red Hat maintains a hardware compatibility list for devices. This is
what was meant in the post that referred you to the hcl. Dig it up via
fedora.redhat.com.
And, what are your video requirements? Are you needing dual frame buffer
support to run magnification under Gnopernicus, for instance? Or are you
looking for video capture from something like Myth TV?
You need to be more forthcoming with your needs.

You can find a list of supported drives for cdrdao on its web site.
This is cdr/dvd drives.
I have had good results with an l gee drive.
My old HP also worked well, but I think they stopped making cd writers.
Most drives work these days.

Check out the following article at fedoranews.org on how much disk space
you need. The 2GB mentioned in doc's note is definitely not enough for a
typical install of Fedora.

Spend the money to buy hardware necessary for removeable hard drives.
Maybe spend the money for a second hard drive tooo which is mounted with
the rails and install speakup on both. If your first hard drive gets
taken down, and you've backed up all your important data elsewhere all you
need do is slip the first hard drive out and slip in a second hard drive
and do the work on the messed up hard drive on an offline computer to
clean up whatever garbage hackers may have left and do a fresh install of
speakup on the second hard drive and keep that as your backup for future
hacker disasters.
