Hi all. Here's a blasphemous question. Uh oh. Someone sent me an excel
file something or other. I know of antiword and pdftotext to make ascii.
Do we have something to do the same to excel? Thanks.

Try xlhtml ... it's about the closest thing I've found, anyway.
I know it's a Debian package--probably for other distros, too.
If all else fails, check freshmeat.

Yes I think that sc can hanile these. Check the sc man page to see
if that will wrork. If that fails you can always look on freshmeat or
ourceforge as I'm sure that you are not the first person who needed en
get at an excel spreadsheet.

The latest version of catdoc can do what you want.

Regretably, it appears not to work with newer xls files.

MS is public with the Excel file format and it is very clean and easy to
work with so extending a program that reads older Excel files shouldn't be
too hard. No, I'm not volunteering.

Well perl has a collection of libs spreadsheet-parse excell and
spreadsheet-writeexcell. I don't remember what spreadsheet-parse excell parses
the sheets into. They really should have converted to html first or text. Who
would do such a horrific thing, sending an excel file.
