Kernel 2.6 uses alsa drivers by default, and that is great, but the alsa
utilities are not available and need to be installed separately. The
problem with that is that the util package matching the kernel alsa
version will not compile. It dies with this error:

mv: cannot stat `t-ja.gmo': No such file or directory

Anybody have a similar problem? or is there another way to get the
utilities? I need aplay, arecord, and amixer.

Which utilities did you get -- you also need the libraries -- don't
forget that and you need the libraries to be installed before the
utils will compile.

I got the 1.0.8 libraries, oss package, and utilities.

The libraries compiled and installed okay, and I did an ldconfig. Then
the oss package went in okay, but the utils failed with error I
mentioned.

I guess I could turn off the kernel alsa support and begin with the
drivers, then the rest of the chain. Would that make a difference do
you think?

Just as a note, if you are using Debian, the packages are up to date,
so you don't need to compile anything -- I am using them with my
2.6.11 kernel.

Just install the alsa-base and alsa-utils packages from debian. No
need to compile by hand any more.

Hi. the easiest way to get alsa running in Debian is to

apt-get install alsa-base

With the 2.6 kernel using alsa, that's all you should need.

Debian is a package based distro, you can build from source, but (most
of the time) can just install the package and start using the app.

Hope this helps.
