Some sites don't work with mplayer but work with trplayer? Hmm. I didn't know
that. {smile}
I think your problem may be that some sites link to >file>.rm, which is invoked
with:
mplayer <file>.rm
whereas others link to <file>.ram, which is invoked with:
mplayer -playlist <file>.ram
If this still doesn't work, try sending me a link and I will see where the
problem is.

Here is one:
rtsp://rx-lvl3-pa27.rbn.com/farm/*/airam/airam/live/live.rm
I have a few more, although granted, most work well with mplayer.

Charles Hallenbeck's comments on Re: trplayer in Debian were as follows:

Works here. But the cache in /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf is set *way* too high.
It caches a whole megabyte. Try to change this value to something more
reasonable like 64. This will cause the link you gave me to load in about 5
seconds.

When I put that URL into Trplayer, I get audio, but it's unintelligible.
It sounds like some sort of voice scrambling. Among the various messages
from Mplayer, are two lines that look intriguing.
Unknown extra header dump: [14] [0] [6] [0] [3] [0] [40] [1] [0] [0]
demux_real: invalid chunksize! (0)
With the second clip, I got the following, after using the "-playlist"
option.
Connect error : Connection refused
Not a Realmedia rtsp url. Trying standard rtsp protocol.
RTSP support requires the "LIVE.COM Streaming Media" libraries!
Unable to open URL:
rtsp://stream2.cbc.ca:7085/live/CBC-RadioOne.rm?end="00:30:00"
I wonder if the site is down, or it really isn't a Real Media stream.
Maybe, I'll try rebuilding Mplayer with the live.com streaming support and
see if it makes a difference.

At the moment I don't have a working trplayer, but until myh recent
upgrade, trplayer with Realplayer 8.0 libraries played that site just
fine. My mplayer takes forever to load its buffer, about a minute
actually, and then crashes instead of playing it.

I'm not sure why it is crashing instead of playing, but it takes a minut or more
because it is waiting for a whole MB of data to buffer before it plays.
Edit /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf and find the line that says:
cache = 1024 # Disk cache 1 MB
and change it so that it says:
cache = 64 # Disk cache 64 KB
This will solve the problem of the extremely large buffer.

Since we're on the topic of doing things with trplayer that we can't
get mplayer to do, I used to love to have the ability to play a file
with trplayer, and be able to hit "t", to find out how much time has
elapsed since the beginning. However, since mplayer is so cluttered
and continually updates the display, I haven't been able to figure out
a way to do the same with mplayer. So, does anyone know of a reliable
way of finding out how much time has elapsed when playing a file with
mplayer? Thanks.

Can you give an example? I'd like to see if it's just a configuration
issue, or perhaps, a bug in Mplayer. One thing I learned the hard way is
that Mplayer doesn't recognize playlists like .m3u, unless you explicitly
use the "-playlist" option on the command line. If you use that, it won't
recognize normal files. This seems to be a bad idea if you ask me. It's
worth noting, though. another thing is that you have to have installed
the Real audio codecs in the right place before building Mplayer, assuming
you build it from source. I'm not sure how the Debian package is set up,
but I found that without the Real codecs in the right place, Mplayer won't
play anything but very old Real Audio files, presumably with its built-in
decoder.

Hi Adam,
Here is another one:
http://radio.cbc.ca/stream/aka-radioone28.ram
I have a collection of nearly 200 audio streams and after upgrading
mplayer to 1.0pre6, I went through the list and attempted to replace
all my trplayer invocations with mplayer, some with and some without
the -playlist option, and about 80 or 90 percent of them made the
swithc okay. But a few stubborn ones would not work. Maybe my codecs
are not current, not sure how long I have had them there.

Charles Hallenbeck's comments on Re: trplayer in Debian were as follows:

It looks as though this stream is unavailable. The error I get is "connection
refused". This indicates that the port specified in the URL contained in the
.ram playlist is closed on the server. Try again later and see if the problem
continues.

Hi.
In Debian, packages are split into two parts. One containing the lib
and one containing the header files.
For package libxxx, install package libxxx-dev to get the headerfiles
for libxxx.
Hope this helps.

trplayer works better then mplayer and the w32codics package? I chalange you to
give a site that mplayer will not play.
