Hi all
For some time I've been trying to get speakfreely working on a lfs system. I as the user, is in the audio group and the sfmike etc binaries have the following permisions:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 13402 2006-06-21 21:53 sfconvert
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 36936 2006-06-04 21:30 sfecho
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 8649 2006-06-21 21:53 sfinfo
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root audio 14672 2006-06-04 21:30 sflaunch
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root audio 10144 2006-06-04 21:30 sflwl
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root audio 18644 2006-06-04 21:30 sflwld
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root audio 125340 2006-06-04 21:30 sfmike
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root audio 45396 2006-06-04 21:30 sfreflect
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root audio 132052 2006-06-04 21:30 sfspeaker
I can play audio files through ogg123 and mplayer etc but just get the following error when I try to run speakfreely. From memery, it's a cvs version of speakfreely and the changelog has this top line:
2002-12-11 Wednesday 18:39
This is the error I get:

This is a screenshot of having logged onto the reflector and initiating the who command, which only lists myself but when I tap the spacebar or someone talks it bails out.
I can't seem to find any logs to which I can refer nor see what's wrong with my permissions. Can anyone offer any ideas of what I haven't or have done that is causing this problem?

Hi Gena. It's not the pernmissions on your binaries, it's either the
permissions on your audio devices in /dev, or you are using a sound card
that needs the -dneeded-linear option.
Look at the permissions on /dev/audio, and /dev/dsp0.

I'm using my sound blaster, I've had for some years and I'd forgot to include the device permissions but they look OK too:
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 4 2006-08-16 17:23 audio

Even root has the problem.

Hi!
Is your card configured to full-deplex, ie it can play and record
simultaneously?
To check this, turn your speaker volume down and type command
cat /dev/dsp > /dev/dsp
Speak to the mikrophone and turn volume up slowly. if you can hear your
voice after a little delay your card is full-duplex.
If above command giver error message your card is probably half-duplex
and you have to recompile speakfreely with -DHALF_DUPLEX option. See
Makefile for more details.

Hi Gena. I checked my Makefile on my machine that is using an sblive
sound card. I have the -DNEEDED_LINEAR flag set.
