Hi folks,
Below is the contents of my dtk-generic debug file, so maybe this will help diagnose what's going wrong on my end.
Thanks,
Steve

Looks a lot like mine, except that your config file is still set to call
dtk-say. Has your executable actually been renamed to that; I guess that
was the case in older versions/

Hi Cheryl,
Actually, it wasn't, but I symlinked say with dtk-say, and issuing the dtk-say command worked so I know that portion of the process is working.

but I don't know for sure why.
I do know I hadn't been starting with the speech-dispatcher command
because it appeared to be automatically started as a daemon by debian;
when I had tried to start it I got 'speech-dispatcher already running".
But
the last time i rebooted that apparently didn't happen because I did the
modprobe command and the speechd_up command and then couldn't find the
/tmp/dtk debugging file even though debugging was still on. so i started
speech-dispatcher; actually, sftsyn was already loaded when I did this and
then I did speechd_up and it worked!!! But I've rebooted since then;
speech-dispatcher still wasn't automatically started and I started it
first, then loaded sftsyn, then speechd_up. I have rebooted and done this
tree times and it is still working.
I have ltlk compiled in my kernel also, but I have "none" as the default.
Sorry this isn't more helpful; try making absolutely sure
speech-dispatcher isn't running and starting again. It also might be
because I changed the permissions on /var/run. I really don't know but
I'm really kind of afraid to change anything now. eventually I will of
course.

Hi
Are you starting speech dispatcher in an init script before you log in as
root? If so, this creates a problem with the dtk-generic module. I've not
yet been able to track it down, and am not sure whether it's a problem
with just the dectalk generic module or all modules that utilize the
generic module. However, starting it before you log in causes the no
speech output problem. I know it's not a problem with speech dispatcher
itself, since flite will work fine when started in an init script. Haven't
tried festival this way.
Other than that, I can't think of anything else at the moment. If that's
not it, I'll have to rack my brains some more.

Hi
The reason it works now is because you've started it after you've logged
in. For whatever reason, when started before you log in, the dtk-generic
module doesn't work properly. I'm not sure if this is just with the
dectalk or whether if it applies to all synthesizers based on the generic
module, since the other one is Epos which is a czech language synthesizer
that I don't have. Other modules don't exhibit this issue, and I'm
definitely checking this out further.

I dunno if that's true.
I have my dectalk coming up during the boot process and it works without
any hassles.
cheryl you might wanna try dpkg-reconfigure speech-dispatcher
hth
and if anyone wants my init script for starting speechd_up during the
boot process let me know and I'll send along.
it's by no means perfect but it works.
it needs more work.

Yes, as you'll see from my recent posts, the init script was the
problem.
Only I didn't actually do it; that's how the debian packages were
installed.
Festival still doesn't appear to work, though I'm not really planning to
use it with speakup. May give it another go later just out of curiosity.
Anybody who uses the debian installation for speech dispatcher should be
warned to either not let speech dispatcher start before login or kill it
after login and re-start it.
Thanks.

Hi Shaun.
I don't really think dpkg-reconfigure will fix this. did you modify the
init script or something?
And did you install with debian packages rather than source?
Thanks.

I installed the debian packages
no problems what so ever. btw did you modify
/etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf and change the default module to
dtk-generic
if you didn't do that and restart speech-dispatcher.
that's all I had to do

yes, changing the default module was the first thing I did.
Maybe you could post your /etc/init.d/speech-dispatcher, to the
list for comparison, because Jacob
has noted the same problem as I've had
Thanks.
