Hi all
I just upgraded my slackware 9.1 system to slackware-current, and
my 2.4.25 kernel to a 2.6 one. Everything works great except for one
thing. Sound doesn't work. The modules load, the mixer settings change...
but I don't hear anything no matter what I set. I've done everything I did
before (unmuted and raised Master and PCM volumes). The mixer reports the
change, even aumix says they've changed, but I just don't hear a thing.
I'm using an SB live 5.1 card. This works fine when I revert back to my
2.4.25 kernel. Anyone else have this problem or know what I've done wrong?
Thanks in advance

I have an idea, you might have thought you had Alsa but had oss. That's
what it looks like, and upgrading the kernel might have damaged all that.
Try using alsamixer instead.
Thanks,
Nick

Hi
No, I'm sure I've got ALSA. I used amixer first to change the
mixer settings. What I meant was that even aumix, the OSS mixer, sees the
changes but it doesn't play anything. There's no errors, just silence.
Even if I did have OSS, the SB live is supported by them so I'd get at
least some sound.

Alsa is included in kernel 2.6. Just try alsamixer.
Thanks,
Nick

Hi
amixer and alsamixer do the same thing. I just tried alsamixer,
the settings are set... but it's still silent as a mouse.

Well, you're ahead of me. I can't get 2.6.5 to compile!

Hi
That's what I don't quite understand. I can cat to them, I get no
errors or even warning messages, but no sound either. The appropriate
modules are loaded, I've checked and double-checked that. The volumes are
set to play, but I can't get one little squeak to come out of the card.
Maybe I'll re-enable my onboard sound and see if I can get anything to
come out of that. Maybe it's something specific to the ALSA version in
2.6.5 with the SB Live driver. Does anyone use ALSA successfully with
kernel 2.6.5 and an SB Live 5.1 card? I know I'm not suffering hardware
failure, the thing works fine with kernel 2.4.25 and ALSA 1.0.4.

Are the appropriate modules showing up in lsmod? Can you cat to them--even nasty noise would prove they're wired in.
On my high-end audio system, my RME Hammerfalls Multiface box, I have to separately bring up volumes--separate from alsamixer. I've written a bash script to do this.

Hi
I'm a bit confused, what do you mean by output? I don't see a
mixer channel by that name. If you mean all the different sound volumes,
I've already unmuted them (Master, PCM, CD, Line). Muting's been the
default in ALSA since back when I started using it at version 0.4. All the
volumes are raised and unmuted, but still I hear nothing at all. I'll
check the Fedora core test list and see what I can find there.

Hi,
On the Fedora core 2 test list this was reported. Check and make sure that
output isn't muted. Apparently that was the "default".
