KNOPPIX speakup iso

do any linux utilities exist to safely split iso files so that file format
isn't trashed?  If so, it's possible one of these could get used to split
the image down into two two 358MB pieces each of which could then be
burned to its own cd.

I've read about an approach of using split to split a large tar.gz file
then create iso images from the pieces afterwards, so it should be
possible to do split -b 650000000 KNOPPIX_v3.2-2003-07-26-EN-speakup.iso
and get xaa and xab back.  After that perhaps running xaa and xab back
through mkissofs and making iso images of both of them would be the way to
go.  If mkissofs doesn't barf and if it barfed probably the xab would be
where it might happen.  Another possibility and I think safer provided you
have the disk space would be to mount the iso image; tar the whole
contents and directory structure remember to use p in tar options, then
split up large tar.gz file with split and then use mkisofs to make iso
images then use cdrecord to record those onto multiple CD's.

Well, maybe, except that if this cd is supposed to boot you need to think
about what you are splitting. I sort of think the needed approach is to
find some megabytes to drop.

Hi.  I got it to burn, but I cheated and got the cdrecord command line
from Gene Colins while talking to him on the reflector.  Stupid me
didn't write it down.  I remembered it required the overburn option
among others.  You're right about not trying to split it up.  It is an
iso image of a compressed Linux file system.

Jude, if you are going to come up with a Rube Goldberg solution to a
problem at least be sure you have a problem.  Nevermind that he never
did.

The Knoppix CD needs to be burnt onto an 80 minute CD.  You also need
to specify the -overburn flag appropriate for whatever package you're
using to burn the disk either cdrecord or cdrdao.  I am sure man
cdrecord or cdrdao will provide abundant instructional moments or
pleasure.

Hi Kirk.
My cd is an 80-minute cd.
Will check out the overburn usage; I knew that was a possibility but for
some reason thought that it couldn't work on all drives; I've not actually
used it so I could be wrong about that.

I've read several times that over burn can dammage some cd burners;
hence I would prefer making that ISO smaller if I were gonna use it.
Not sure over burn should be used as a "standard practice."  But I
guess it works for some folks.

Well, so far it hasn't worked for me to overburn on this.
Using the -dao option I finally did get it to overburn but then I got an
input-output error when it was fixating and while it did mount there were
files I couldn't call up.
I realize I may not be overburning correctly however.
I don't really need to use this as I can use knoopix with my braillelite
or oralux with speech but just wanted to try it.
Tomsrtbt with speakup, on the other hand, does work for me. I was really
impressed as Tom has that floppy so packed I didn't think it was possible.

I'm basing this on documentation I read which came with my Creative
Labs CD ROM burner.  I think I also saw implications of this in the
CD-Copying-HOWTO.
