Hi all. i have a box here with 2 ethernet cards both using the 3c59x.o
module.
I tried to install slackware on this box but it seems one of these cards
was having some kind of resource conflict with ide0 bc whenever the disk
was accessed extensivly like when I created the filesystems or when
slackware started installing packages the thing would lock up. this
problem went away when I pulled the second card.
my question is how can I tell the 3c59x module which irq to use for
which card? these are both pci network cards one is a regular 3com
ethernet adapter and the other has bnc and aui connecters in adition to
the ethernet.

The device driver doesn't do this. The IRQ is allocated by either LInux or
the BIOS, depending on which does the PCI setup. I admit to not knowing
much about all this. I personally would like to know how to reserve IRQs
if you want LInux to do the PCI setup. Perhaps someone else on here knows
more.
Geoff.

this is weird bc I thought pci was supposed to assign ircs to the
hardware in order to prevent conflicts such as those present in
non-pnp isa...

It is. Which is why I think it's a little strange. Of course, if you have
an ISA device, it's not very clear to me how to tell the PCI IRQ allocation
process not to use that particular IRQ.
The weird thing in this case of yours is that IDE controllers are on pretty
standard IRQs and I find it odd that those were allocated to a PCI device.
Perhaps show us the output of "lspci -v"?
Geoff.

and what really sucks is I cant even get into the bios setup proggie
since that requires an os supporting realmode dos and I currently have
linux installed on this machine. stupid compaq. I'l;l look at their
site maybe I can find some kind of bootdisk or maybe (I doubt it
though) a bios setup for *nix. well it does say '...if you are using
unix, please insert your compaq diag disk..." when I try to enter
setup...
