Hi everyone. I am aware that there are many different cd Bibles out
there. What might be a good one for us? I have a friend who is looking
for either that, or she has heard that it is available in a stand alone
thing, kind of like the franklin dictionary. Could someone make some
suggestions?

love,

Diana

and it works pretty well for me.

Best regards,

Sergey.

Which translation and what kind of features are you looking for? One
King James translation which works well on LINUX (and other OS's) can
be found at ftp site ftp.cdrom.com in /pub/simtelnet/msdos/bible.
Get the files kbib-kj*.zip and unzip them into an empty directory
(the resulting files will require over 4 MB of space). While
this particular release was originally set up for DOS systems, the
books are in ASCII text files with only enough non-printable
characters to indicate beginnings of verses. The text is easily
readable with Speakup on LINUX. This version can be downloaded and
burned onto a CD if you have to have a CD copy, but it is pure text
(no pictures, sounds, smells, or tastes:)), so it may not be quite
what you are looking for.

I hope this helps, and have a _great_ day!

I would find that of interest, but I think my friend is wanting other
things like a concordance and that kind of thing.

You might want to know that the dict command typically includes Easton's
searches. So, for example, you can do the following at a bash prompt:

dict ephesus

and get the Easton's entry, along with some other entries.

As for having a Bible on your computer, if you're on Debian, try:

apt-cache search bible

I think you'll have fun with the results, many of which you can easily
install and use. To install any one you would, of course, do:

apt-get install [package name]

it would be accessible or not.
Probably will try it eventually.

If you have an RPM-based system, you can try

ftp://prince.homelinux.org/software/brs.rpm

Someone handed me this free package, and I keep forgetting I have it on my ftp site. It is a complete King James bible
including a concordance and search functionality.

rpm -i file.rpm

<<I have fallen in love with dict.>>

I've got Slackware 9 and I got told command not found or words to that
effect. Is it an extra I have to dig for or is it something supplied
with other distros and not mine.

Dictionaries are too useful not to have one.

I didn't have dict automatically on debian either. I had to use apt-get
to
get it. So it's probably available in the slackware packages.

I am a Slacker too. I created an alias called "dict" which takes
me to the www.dict.org website, which is a nice accessible
resource.

PS: Like this:

alias dict='lynx http://www.dict.org'

Hey.
I have a doubletalk PC that is currently running with the newest speakup. I
am looking to get rid of this, as I am getting rid of my last ISA machine.
Mail me back if you're looking for a good, high quality synthesizer at a
reasonable price. I don't want to go too much in to detail as it is a
little off topic for this list, but I see people here who want to get
speaup up and running but can't aford a hardware synthesizer.

Sincerely,
Patrick

Hi, Chuck:

Just to be clear, dict is also available as a network connected client
service in a command you type at the shell prompt. It's extensible in
terms of which dictionary resources are accessed. And, it's possible to
run a dict server and create a new dictionary--something I've
recommended in certain instances to certain folks.

Janina,

Thanks. The www.dict.org website has a lot of options too,
including lookup with the soundex algorithm, in case you are
unclear about spelling. Plus you can direct your lookup to Bible
data bases too. I wonder if the dict client you are talking about
is a front end for the services on this website? I have been
relying on a wordnet installed on my system, which is better than
nothing, but I see that wordnet is also available with the
www.dict.org searches and is consulted by default, along with
other databases. Excellent resources for students and writers,
makes one want to study and write!

According to the dict man page, querrying alt.dict.org is the default
behavior. However, you can specify other hosts, and can even become a
dict server if you want to, serving an entirely new dictionary.
