They are little things the sales person called them thumb drives. They connect to a usb port and they are a storage device. They are supposed to be good for storing pictures and let's say a sound that you don't want to use a whole cd for. You supposedly can drop them in your pocket take them cross country hook them up to a different computer, and you have your pictures or documents. I believe that some of them actually fit on key chains. love, Diana On Tue, 2 Sep 2003, Joseph C. Lininger wrote: > I'm not sure what these drives are. Some of the more expensive ones are supposedly manufactured with a microprocessor inside, which can execute a certain program when it detects a USB connection to the pc. I'd try the usb-storage module, and see what that does. Don't quote me on that though. I don't have one of these little wonders myself, I heard everything I know about them somewhere else. I have one of these things and very good they are too. I'm trying to find the novel one that doubles up as a mp3 player from the material you load onto it. I think it charges the internal battery offf the usb socket when plugged in, so I guess you have to leave it plugged in a while periodically. That was a 128Mb model, the one at work is a 256 which is the largest Ive heard of so far. GA! ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 14+ messages in thread

Lininger @ UTC (permalink / raw) To: speakup Sounds like a USB memory device. The short answer to your question is yes, most likely. The long answer is that would depend on the type of drive. Linux supports most of these types of drives, but you may need to recompile your kernel and/or obtain a module for the type of drive you have. Generally, most distros don't compile this support even as a module by default, though you should have a copy of the Linux source so you can compile in the support. I'd be happy to provide assistance with this if you need it. -- Jospeh C. I read somewhere online that Linux, well I should say RedHat supported these drives. But it was not on an official RedHat page, and the site is probably gone now. I would recommend calling the sales person back and asking her for technical support, they might be able to tell you if linux supports their products. Lininger @ UTC (permalink / raw) To: speakup the Lexar Jumpshot drives are supported by Linux. However, you should be aware that the support is currently experimental and such can be dangerous. It probably won't crash your machine, however I would advise that if you use the drive under Linux, don't keep critical data on it. Then again, that argument can be made for any storage device. You should always have at least two copies of critical data. <grin> Anyway, if you would like help setting up Linux to work with the Lexar jumpshot drives, just drop a line.
