Hi everyone. A friend of mine has slackware 7 with speakup and it seems
to work out well for him. However, he doesn't have ssh and he has a need
for it. It is available for version 8 so my question is will it work with
7 or is there an alternative place that might have older versions?

Open ssh should come with slackware 7. If not, then I don't see a reason why newer packages shouldn't work, but don't quote me on that.

No, both ssh and ssl arrived in slack 8.

No again. New gcc and new kernel revs.
I don't think it will work.

I believe the problem is that it was installed the slackware 7 that is
his computer before he got it. I believe that this computer was custom
built for him, and the person who built it did not give him disks!

If your friend has a fast connection, and a cd burner, or if he knows somebody with these things, he can download the install cd images for slackware 7 or any newer slackware.
If your friend isn't able to get a cd burned off the net, the official slackware set is available for $39.95.

It is not very difficult to reinstall slackware.
Granted, I've done it many times over, but for me
it only takes about 15 minutes.
It is probably worthwhile to upgrade from version 7
to the newer slackware 9. There have been many many
improvements to everything.
There is a .iso image that can be easily burned
onto CD-ROM. It is also easy to install from the
hard drive. He can download the packages to the
hard drive, create boot floppies, and install
with no need for CD-ROM.

If you intend to install festival or eflite, keep your de package from
your earlier version handy since gcc 3.22 will not build either of these
packages. I did manage to get both built and installed with gcc 2.95.3
though.On Fri, 13 Jun 2003, Doug wrote:

Hi, both flite and eflite built fine using gcc 3.2 on my Red Hat system.
That is truely weird why they wouldn't compile on your system.

What I found in my tests is that Festival would compile just fine provided
you didn't enable shared libraries. The documentation states that shared
libraries should work just fine in Linux, but it bombed out in Slackware
9.0 with the default of static libraries, it took awhile to build, but
was able to run just fine. Personally, I find the Festival voices very
flat and difficult to listen to for long periods. Festival was also
somewhat flaky in Gnopernicus for me due to its not supporting indexing.
I haven't messed with Flite since it isn't yet supported by Gnopernicus.
Freetts uses the same speech as Festival, but since it's Java-based, you
really need a fast computer to make it practical.

Well, one posibility is to get the latest openssh and compile from source.
