Do you have freedos?

What is line 496? What is it doing?

HINT: Use Ctrl-Shift-Underscore to speed your way to line 496.

Hello Janina,

Actually I don't know in which file to look for the line of
code? I do have freedos but it dpends upon dos emu-1.0.1 I think. so
this dosemu may not need it.

When is this happening? Provide more data, please. Is it during during
compilation? If it's the executable, then you won't be able to use it,
probably, and have to compile.

You need to properly edit for your needs the
$home/dosemu/conf/dosemu.conf file.

Read the docs, and they explain all that.

No, since dosemu is a vm, it needs something to run.

Hi. Your install is screwed. this was a bug in 1.1.4.0. You need to get
a fresh sourcetree, grab the latest patchset from www.dosemu.org/testing,
and patch it into your tree. then build and install dosemu and you should
be set.

Hi Greg,

I wonder. I brought up the conf file and looked for line 496
where the reported parsing failure occured. I got the message that
there were only 2 hundred and something lines in the file.

So dosemu is a kind of shell? Hmmm.

We weren't looking at the same conf file he's talking about. Check more
closely. He's talking about a config file under $HOME/dosemu, which on
your system would be /home/ccrawford/dosemu.

I suspect it's worth putting the rpm back in to take a look in there.
Easiest path and all that.

Yeah, except that it doesn't compile:

dosemu-1.1.4#make
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/local/src/dosemu-1.1.4/src'
make[1]: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/src/dosemu-1.1.4/src'
/bin/bash: line 1:
55]/usr/local/src/dosemu-1.1.4/src/arch/linux/Makefile.main: No such
file or directory
make: *** [default] Error 127

Meanwhile, configure really had no problems except the following, which
doesn't seem as if it's the problem above:

configure: WARNING:
configure: WARNING: Rejecting system S-Lang with UTF-8 support. It is
incompatible with DOSEMU. Forcing use of the supplied S-Lang plugin.

Configure finished. Do 'make' to compile Dosemu.

The file to download with the patches is the dosemu-1.1.4.15-patchset.tgz
file. That has all of the patches in a single file. That was a little
work but I got dosemu running. Interestingly it has bwbasic as a
language. The edit command in freedos talks lots better than the
Microsoft version used to with some of those ancient screen readers though
beware there are screen border characters on ends of lines once a file is
opened with edit.On Sat, 3 May 2003, Alex Snow wrote:

Help! I can't figure out why I cannot compile. I have dosemu 1.1.4

Before compiling did you run the do_patch script while in the dosemu
directory? If you unpack the patchset file in your dosemu directory it
builds the proper directory tree structure, then in the dosemu directory
type tmp/do_patch and wait a couple seconds. Then you have a choice.
edit compiletime-setings or edit compiletime-settings.devel and copy it
over compiletime-settings. The .devel extension means if you use what's
in that file you'll be running with experimental stuff turned on. Then
./configure; make; make install. if you copy dosemu-freedos-bin.tgz to
/usr/share/dosemu before running dosemu from a user directory you should
get a few messages then the c: prompt. On Sat, 3 May 2003, Janina Sajka

Yes. I put the patch tar ball in the dosemu source tree and uncompressed
it. It created the tmp/, and I ran the do-patch file that's in there.

It gave no errors, but it also did not come back with anything about
devel. That seems to be different.

The ./configure went fine. Things break immediately with make.

OK, I see that, but it's not the issue. Those are just settings for the
./configure process which make will invoke, if you don't invoke it
yourself as per the usual process.

Either way, I'm still choking on the same make error, which appears to
be some complaint about the ` char, namely accent, the one at the upper
left corner of the qwerty, next to the 1 key. For some reason, on my RH9
install, make doesn't like that.

What is the complaint? "some complaint", is slightly ambiguous.

It's in the output of make which is at the bottom of the quotations.
Again, it seems to be about the accent char, namely ` which is the char
to the left of the number one at the upper corner of the qwerty
keyboard. Can I make it more plain? OK, I'll put the output of make
right here and dump the rest of the quotations to keep under 5K:

dosemu-1.1.4#make

It sounds like either you have a missing file somewhere or there is a typo
in the make file. It's odd that the "no such file or directory" message
doesn't say the file it is looking for.

That's exactly what I thought until I ran make -d, that is make with the
debug switch. From this it became obvious that it's looking at the
accent as a filename. At least that's how I read that output. Once
again, this is the accent character to the left of the number one on the
qwerty -- '`' that one. Here's the output of make -d. Notice,
especially, the third line, just to the left of "stop," and also the
second line.

So, I think there's something strange in my setup, but it's default RH9.
And, nothing else has choked and I've done quite a few compiles.

Those very well may be the issue, since those aren't parameters for make
but are parameters for ./configure. I haven't tried it, with this package
yet but this may be one where you really do need to run the ./configure
script. On Sat, 3 May 2003, Janina Sajka wrote:

Did you just run make to build dosemu? If yes, give me a few and I'll do
a make clean and try to reproduce your error condition. On Sat, 3 May 2003,

That is most definitely unusual. Send me the Makefile off list, and the
name of the rule you originally try to have made.

One silly question here; Do you use a DOS screen reader once inside
the DOS prompt? I've never had a real interest in DOS stuff all that
much but this might be a handy way to configure some hardware that
requires a DOS setup program like some of those network cards and the like.

No, not a silly question. I don't know that a dos screen reader is needed
since the dos prompt and programs that run in that environment come up
talking under speakup.

I can do that, and will when I get a few moments. But, I'm not sure
that's going to help. Here's why I think that.

Yesterday, Charlie used exactly the same source tree and compiled
successfully. He sent me a tar ball of his tree, and I had exactly the
same problems with his source tree.

So, I'm convinced the answer isn't fully in the source itself. Very
strange.

You don't have to use a DOS screen reader, but you might want to if
you're running an application with complex screens like WordPerfect 5.1,
for example. The advantage would be the special, application specific
"set" files prepared for that venerable old DOS app.

Of course, we might just be able to duplicate that kind of functionality
with Speakup 2.x.

As for the DOS setup ... I doubt it. If your host system doesn't know
how to talk to the hardware device, how is it supposed to map calls from
the guest OS? I believe this is a general rule for emmulation.

true. but the error can easily be fixed by applying latest patchset.

thaks! I did get it installed with alot of help from Janina. DBASE
runs well, WordPerfect does not and I need to look at seeing if I can
put some parameters int the config.sys file. I does the job I want with
respect to certain items and I am very happy I spent all that tiime.
Too bad there is not a reliable rpm on this.

False. I've already applied that patch--all the way up to patch 15 which
is the most current. I've said that already, too, more than once.

Interesting you mention dbase. I used to program with that. Would you
try something for me and let me know what happens? Try writing a little
program file and put the line:

@ 5,5 say "Hello World!"
in the program and then run the program? Those say commands wouldn't
write the same way the ?? command would.

Yeah I have had that prog installed here for months. I was quite amazed
when I got borland c++3.something to run under it.

I set up vocacl eyes in dosemu and it hung the emulation. Also
the dectalk did not respond to the decexp.com program. So I either have
to play with the settings in the autoexec or forget it for vocal eyes.

One thing I have noticed though is the buffering is very poor. I
will hear a buch of stuff that was associated with something I may have
done a program ago. I also notice that if I go up the screen with
speakup, I will see stuff from other apps running in Linux. Buffer
flushing does not seem to be going right.

Hi. I think you may have to setup your serial ports in global.conf or
dosemu.conf. have you done this?

That is because they are direct screen writes. Jamal Mazrui wrote a
little terminal emulation program that paints the string a second time
and in doing so echoes the text to the terminal program causing speech
to come out. The problem is that this is DOS and secondly, there is no
cursuring. So the question mark goes through bios standard output and
the at sign i a screen write.
