Well ok, so I lied, I can get streams to play, and in fact there are some
streams that play perfectly, but most of them seem to cause mplayer to
crash. They start playing for about a second, then pause for about 2
seconds as if there's lag or network congestion, then play for about 3
seconds and then mplayer simply hangs. It's weird, it happens with asf
and asx streams, not sure why this should be, especially since a small
proportion play without a hitch.

Any suggestions? Is it something to do with the streams themselves?

Cheers.

p.s. Even the BBC has started using them now, though there's plays
perfectly.

Toby,
Could you send along some links for me to test. I installed mplayer but
the one link I found didn't work.

Thanks

Ok Chris, I'm sending 3:

This one works:

http://STREAM.SERVSTREAM.COM/ViewWeb/BBCRadio_music/Event/1Xtra56k.asx

and this is an example of one that fails in the way I described in my last
message:

http://audio.musicradio.com/BroadlandFM.asx

This one doesn't even start to get played:

http://streaming.capitalinteractive.co.uk/brmb_low

Cheers.

This one started playing as it looked in mplayer but I didnt hear
anything.. maybe they didnt stream anything for the 30 seconds I tried.

Works perfectly fine for me.

This one to, I'm actually listening to it atm, great music. :-)

I can only suggest that you upgrade mplayer and install all the windows codecs
again. And remember to install new config files in your ~/.mplayer dir. They
make the old ones obsolete with every release.

Forgot to mention that the streams hang after about 2 seconds as you described
earlier and then start playing again. I bet it has something with the caching
of streamed data to do. Altho after the first little break everything goes on
playing just fine. mplayer never hangs for me, it continues to play.

Hi there Toby. It seems that some client header information is possibly
being sent to every server except the bbc server, which was the url which
you labeled as working. I got no packet dumps of header information as of
yet, however this seems like the most logical thing that would be
occuring. Since I have alsa5 here, I tried both oss and alsa5. Alsa will
just replay the audio buffer, which indicates that no new audio is being
send to the audio device. Thus, the connection to the stream has been
dropped. Have you tried with Windblows?

Hi Johbe. What ver of mplayer are you running? I have basically the same
problem that Toby has, and it seems that my connection has been dropped.
This is apparent bc when I specify audio as alsa5, after playing one of
the non-working streams the audio buffer will start looping after about 3
secs of live playback.

Speaking of hanging, with oss the audio hangs and never starts playing
again. I suspect that this is when the buffer is looping, but oss
emulator in Alsa doesn't play this.

I'm constantly upgrading mplayer.. I run the development releases, cvs
snapshots. At the moment I'm using version
MPlayer CVS-021008-06:00-2.95.4 (C) 2000-2002 Arpad Gereoffy (see DOCS)

This is the complete output of one of the streams, when I tried using sdl
audio output which works just fine, because I made sure I had sdl libraries
installed and working when I compiled mplayer.

No, I don't currently have a functional Winblows system to check it out
with, in fact, I don't have a Winblows system at all at the moment.

Cheers.

Hi Toby. The problem has been fixed apparently in the
pre8 version of mplayer. You might also want to d/l a
new version of the w32 codecs. Then rebuild, and things
should work for you. I tried the url that Johbe
mentioned in his reply, and it appeared to work after
skipping for aprox 3 secs.
