Dec Talk internal cards supported?

Hi there

I am able to locate someone with 2 DEC Talk cards, one DECTalk Express 
internal, and the other one DEC 32 also internal.  Are they supported?

Neither of the cards you mention are internal.  The Dectalk Express is a
serial device that is supported by Speakup.  The Dectalk 32 (perhaps you
mean Dectalk Access32) is a software synthesizer that is only available in
Windows and costs money.  The only internal Dectalks are the Dectalk PC
and Dectalk PC2, neither of which are supported by Speakup.

That's what I thought but the person who is selling them specifically said 
they were both internal 'long card as we all know'

It is difficult to find computers or have on ebuilt with the isa slots 
required for the dec pc's.  So $150 might be unrealistic.

Hello all.  There are no dectalk internal boards supported to my
knowledge.  Only the external serial dectalk express and the original
dectalk external synthesizers are supported.  The problem with the
internal isa cards is that they have to have software downloaded onto
the card before they can be used.  Since Speakup is activated and
initialized almost the first thing after the kernel is loaded and
initialized, and before the file system is available, there is at
present no way to have the kernel download the software onto the
internal dectalk boards.  I believe you can use these boards with emacs
speak, but I am not familiar with it, and so can not say.  Making these
dectalk boards usable is on Kirk's to do list, but there are a number of
things that have to happen first, such as the almost complete rewrite of
Speakup to make it usable with the 2.2.5 kernels, and the modularization
of the synthesizer drivers, before a dectalk-pc driver could be written.

Hi there. How would one download the necissary software onto the Dectalk
board?  BC what I was thinking is possibly modify the firmware on the board
so that it doesn't need to be downloaded or sent an init command.

what about configuring your system like this:
1 boot to dos
in the autoexec.bat file add the lines to load the drivers for the dectalk
chipset
2 have autoexec.bat run loadlin and boot your system.. Then how would the
dectalk be accessed, through a virtual serial port? a virtual paralelle
port? I raelly don't know, I just thought, cause once I had an mwave piece
of crap modem sound card combo in my old IBM aptiva, and that is what I did
for a little bit, until a friend was going to take apart a system and I got
the sb16.. best thing I ever did for tat poor aptiva..

There's a batch file that runs to get the dectalk going.  That batch file
contains the irq and hex addresses you need being passed as parameters to
the dos initialization software to access the dectalk in linux.  If you
can find out what that software sends to the hex port to initialize the
dectalk, assembly experience required it might be possible to expand
support.

How to upload the software is not the issue.  The issue is getting the
software that you need to load.  Since, at present, speakup wants to enable
the synth from the get go, there are no filesystems available from which to
retrieve the software to send to the card.  The only other alternative is
to store it in the driver itself.  I don't know how big this software is,
but this is probably a flagrant waste of space if it's at all doable.

Well, there's just one problem with that idea.  The Dectalk internal cards
use a completely different init and command structure than the Dectalk
Express, I believe.  However don't quote me on that, as I haven't actually
read the documentation for it.

There is a Dectalk PC driver at
ftp://ftp.leb.net/pub/blinux/dectalk_pc-0.95.tgz that I actually got to
work once.  However, I've since discovered that it won't compile with a
2.4.X kernel.  I had to change one line in the source code to reflect my
base address as set by the dip switches on the card because it was not set
at factory defaults.  It loaded as a kernel module and then you ran a
shell script to load the files from your Dectalk installation disk onto
the card.  In other words, all it did is load the files provided by
Digital into the card under Linux and then created a fake serial port at
/dev/dtpc0 that you could send text through.  It sort of worked with
Emacspeak using its Dectalk Express driver, but spat out a lot of errors
about unrecognized commands because Emacspeak thought it was talking to a
Dectalk express.  So, the driver isn't very useful, but it may be worth
studying to see how it goes about loading drivers onto the card and how it
talks to it.

While this would indeed work, I don't think it's fair to make anyone who
wants to use a dectalk Pc have DOS installed as well as Linux.  And I think
this is how Kirk and co will see it.

I would tend to agree with geoff on this point. why should we have to
run dos just to get support for the dectalk pc before starting linux? it
seems pointless imho.
from what I'm reading, a complete rewrite of the dectalk pc driver for
linux would need to take place before anything that remotely looks like
a viable solution for the support of the dectalk pc with speakup is
conceived.
it may well be that the dictionary files need to be written into the
driver for this to happen but it also could make for a bloated driver.
where more things could go wrong than is necissary.
that's just my $0.02 australian anyways.

Hi. I was going to modularize the dectalk driver, but unfortunately
couldn't due to time constraints. I am currently working on patching
Unreal Ircd, so it is on my todo list. Kirk, why didn't you modularize the
speakup mods from the start? Bc now having to do it vs could have done it
a while ago can save you time. I think that Speakup is a great product,
both from a code and user perspective. Do you intend to add modprobe
functionality to the various mods? Bc what you could do is stack the
Speakup esential module ontop of all the synth modules. So if I did
modprobe speakup_dectlk it would load speakup_dectlk.o, speakup.o, and all
other necessary dependencies. Just a thought.

Of course it had been a decade+ since I last used Emacs and have forgotten 
most of the commands already (back then I can see and therefore had cheat 
sheets and manuals)

Oh well I guess until I can find an external DEC that I can afford, my poor 
BNS will have to do the job AND be my 'digital diary' :)

That's true.  However that's not my main concern - if Speakup doesn't 
support them then they won't do me any good even if they were free...

There are a bunch of mirror sites but I advise trying download this weekend 
or even next week.  I manage to get into their ftp site but that won't do 
me any good coz they are downloading at 100Kbps right now, so a 650M CD 
will take 10 hours+ to download, days for 5 Cds...

Hi, as far as I am aware Red hat 8.0 is not accessible for download yet. The
the directory is there, but every site I've checked still does not have
anonymous access to the directories and files.
They are probably still uploading the files, or whatever they are up to at
this point.
Give them about a week and try again. I'm sure they should be up by then.

Thomas, I won't contradict your experience because what happened to you is what happened to you.  However, your
conclusions aqre wrong. Red Hat 8.0 is released and available for download or purchase.
