turning off relaying in exim

Hi all. Recently when testing some avenues into my system, I came across
the fact that I was relaying mail from my domain to anywhere on the
internet. I wanted to disable this, so I went into /etc/exim.conf and
commented out relay_domains. However after restarting exim, relaying still
seems to be turned on. Does anyone know how to turn it off or whether or
not there are other files where relaying could be turned on? Thanks!

Don't comment it out.  Instead leave it as is but don't put any domains
in the line after the equal sign.

Also, check the line:

local_domains = localhost

So that only your host can relay though.

One more setting, host allow line like this:

host_accept_relay = "127.0.0.1:192.168.1.0/7"

So that you can allow specific ips to relay.  if you only specify
localhost then that is all that is allowed.

First of all you need to see why relaying is being allowed.
It is sometimes necessary to accept smtp from localhost because some
muas put messages in like this.
to do relay testing try this:

exim -bh ip.address.not.hostname
helo fully.qualified.domain.name
mail from:email.address@valid.domain
rcpt to:valid.target@domain.name
data
tra la la la
.
Note that the above was a fullstop on a line by itself.
As you run this procedure exim will tell you what cheks are beeing performed.
It tells you which fail which succeed and why relaying works or
doesn't.
relay_domains lets you specify who can relay by fqdn.
sender_accept_relay tells you by networks a nd ip addresses.
the spec.txt has a rather nice section that sets it all out rather nicely;
and it got easier to understand since exim v3.0. I recall 1.61 relay
controls;
sender_accept_relay sender_reject_relay and sender_reject_relay_except or some silliness.
