Quite a lot of radio stations in the UK seem to be using a strange format
to stream their audio.
The mime type is application/x-ms-asf but the files served are actually
.asx files.
Any thoughts appreciated.
Cheers.
p.s. The BBC don't use this format, they use good ol' Real Audio.

Yeah, that's one of microsoft's formats. It plays with winblows media
player but I don't know if there is any player for linux. The ".asx" files
are the playlists.

Hi. I'd just like to add that if you want video, you'll need to compile in support for the sdl libraries for X, which you can get I believe at http://wwwopensdl.org.

Hmmm, well I don't want video, I followed the instructions given by Johan,
and it sort of works. I had to tell it to use the oss sound driver,
because under alsa it kept playing the same half-second or so of audio
over and over again till I killed speakup.
Also, when I try to play .asx files it says it can't find a load of fonts
it needs, don't know what that's about, but it's looking in my home dir
and in /usr/local/share/something.
Cheers.

Hi Toby. What version of alsa gave you the audio playback problem? Was it
0.9.0beta12? Because my 2.4.18 kernel doesn't have the oss modules
compiled into it. I really don't want to rebuild the kernel!

Yes, I'm using the same version as you, but if you read the message that
Johan sent, he did say that ALSA support is still under construction, as
it were, or at least I think that's where I saw that, but alsa doesn't
appear to be stable for it yet.
Cheers.

Hi Toby. So I would have to rebuild the kernel just to be able to play
audio with mplayer? Couldn't mplayer use oss emulation available in alsa
and work properly?

Hmmm, the only oss stuff I've got in my kernel is soundcore. As long as
your alsa drivers are built with oss emulation, it should work, just use
ao=oss instead of ao=alsa9.
