Hi, list. I am working on trying to make a speakup version of Mandrake 8.1
for general distribution.
I just downloaded speakup 1.0.0 from the net, patched it into the 2.4.8
kernel, ran cvs checkout, and then ran make config.
I went through the entire configuration, and was not prompted for speakup
support. Is something wrong or is it built in audomatically now?
If something went wrong with the make config how do I add it to config so
that it will build?

Hi:
No this is not normal. The patching process should include speakup in the
make config system. Did any hunks fail?
Geoff.

Hi, I tried the stock and a generic kernel. Generic kernel had no hunks
fail, but speakup was not in the config.
I am wondering how to add it to my make config since it did not ask.
I pretty much did a stripped down kernel with no sound, no network, etc
just to make a boot diskette for install, and there was no option for
Speakup.
Do I have to select sound or something to get speakup?

No, don't need any sound cards or any of that to get speakup to configure.
I run ./install from within the speakup-1.00 directory and I always place
the speakup-1.00 directory inside the /usr/src directory. That always
seems to patch the stuff in /usr/src/linux with no problems. Once
./install is finished, you might want to dig down into the
/usr/src/linux/drivers/char directory to see if speakup is there; that
might give some clues if you are still having troubles.

Tom: You mentioned patching in speakup 1.0 before updating from cvs. Did you compile the kernel from the speakup 1.0 package before checking out from cvs? If so you should have been prompted for speakup that first time. If not then I recommend you blow the tree away and compile either just from the speakup 1.0 package or from cvs.

Hi, Kirk.
Well, I've blown that tree away about three times, and all with the same
result of no Speakup config. First i tried the cvs version, and that didn't
work. I thought, "Ok, it's a bug in the cvs version."
so I blew the tree away, and then downloaded the 1.0.00 tarball, extracted
it, and ran the ./install script.
It patched wonderfully, and then I ran make config. All the standard
configurations were there, but speakup was not.
I'm wondering if this is specific to the 2.4.8 kernel. I've got a newer tree
sitting around, and I'll see if I get the same hangup. I'm not sure why
speakup 1.0.0 is not putting itself in the config.
This is the first time I've bothered using 1.0, and so far I've not been
able to get it to work.

Ermm. Thomas, I'm assuming you're using make menuconfig or Xconfig or
something. Speakup is (Lemme look...jus a second) ... Ah. Under the
"console drivers" section of the menu. (If you knew that and it's
still not there...umm, sorry)

One vital thing I just thought of is that during make config, you need to enable the vga text console part of the script in order to recieve any speakup configuration prompts. If you don't answer y to that question, you will not be prompted for speakup.
