Greetings!
I've been out of the loop with speakup and linux for a while and I'm now
trying to get things set up again.
I'm using Slackware 7.1, which uses the Linux kernel 2.2.16.
I recall that the first time I did all of this I could never get Speakup
to properly patch and allow me to configure Linux 2.2.16 so that I could
make adjustments to the doubletalk's speech. I downloaded the 2.4.9 kernel
and unpacked it to my /usr/local/src/linux path, but the ./install command
still doesn't patch properly and reports that it is patching 2.2 of Linux,
which is the version that is running.
When I try to run "make menuconfig" I do not find any of the
"speakup" options there so something isn't being patched properly. I do
know I got around all this and made things work before, but I honestly
don't remember what I had to do.
If someone could help me I'd be very grateful.
Thanks.

Hi, Keith you need a 2.4 kernel to use Speakup 1.0.0.
I'd suggest something like 2.4.13 for starts.
An alternate suggestion is to download Slackware 8, and get Slackware with
Speakup built in already.

If you're going to go for a 2.4.x kernel, then why not go straight for 2.4.17?

OK. I think I didn't make myself very clear before. I did download and
unpack the 2.4.17 version of the Linux kernel. Do I need to compile and
boot with that kernel before I can patch it with the speakup installation?
Installing Slackware 8.0 sounds like a great idea, but I've had trouble
finding it. Most of the sites I've check still only have up to 7.1.
Thanks.

No, you don't. If it were any patch other than speakup, I'd say that it might
be a good idea, just to make sure the base linux system for that version runs
ok on your machine. However there is no technical reason why you have to have
a particular kernel running in order to patch that kernel's source tree, and
that goes for any patch, not just speakup.

Hi:
Just to clarify things. Speakup 1.00 and speakup 0.10 require at least
kernel 2.2.18 or above in the 2.2.x tree. The announcement for speakup 1.0
gives no minimum in the 2.4.x tree, but there may well be one. Some
rewrites were done to make it more backward compatible in the 2.4.x tree,
but the truth is that we just don't really know how old a 2.4.x kernel will
patch correctly.
Geoff.

Utter rubbish! I'm running speakup 1.0 under kernel 2.2.20 right now!
Please, if you're going to give out advice, especially to new users, make
sure it's correct. There's no reason why new users should feel compelled
to use the 2.4.x kernel series. I'm a seasoned user now (almost 3 years)
and I'm still not using it.

Take it easy. I've never been able to get 1.0 to build in2.2.19 and earlier.
However, it worked in 2.4 and up.
I gave advice based on experience.

What kinds of problems did you have building it into 2.2.19?

Thomas -
My experience is different from yours too; I am using speakup 1.0
with 2.2.19 just fine. I think the lowest kernel version with
which you can use speakup 1.0 is something like 2.2.17 if I am
not mistaken.

I think this is your problem. The kernel source needs to be in
/usr/src/linux . Of course, a directory symlinked to this one will do fine
too.
