Accessing msn messenger under linux

Hi guys. I've been told a long time ago that if you have a hotmail account you can access the msn messenger service under linux.
Can anyone tell me what programs I can to use this.
I have something that lets me access aim and icq just need something that'll let me access msn messenger.

the program is called centericq
I think you can do an apt-get install for it but it has been a while.

Making my modem accesible to nonroot users.

All right, so now I can dial in, yay, but I can only access my modem as 
root.  My other user identity can't find the modem.  How do I make the 
modem findable to my other user so that I'm not getting online as root all 
the time?

Yes you can do apt-get install centericq however that version is outdated.
If interested I'll provide a new source for newer centericq-cvs which is the
latest nightly build.

Yeah that's fine with me, since when I use microshaft messanger all I use is
the text portion.  If I need voice I'll just use speakfreely.
Explorer has caused a general protection fault in module kernel32.dll. I'm
sick of Winblows!

Centericq supports MSN to a point, just the text portions, but it works
well enough for me.

Just as an fyi though, you don't have to have a hotmail account to have
access to msn messenger.

That's correct, you just need a passport.com account, which, although a
little-known fact, you can create with any email address you like.  I
don't have a hotmail account, never have, never will.

Hi,

     If I remember correctly, you're using wvdial.  If so, put an 
ampersand (&) at the end of the command-line.  It might look like: wvdial &
That'll let you have your prompt back.  Next, log out of root, and log in 
as yourself.  BTW, a good way to get root access when you need it is to 
use the "su" command.  SU allows you to switch to another user.  The 
default for the su command is root.  To get root's environment in addition 
to root's user and group ID's, use the minus sign after the command.  It 
would look like: "su -", without the quotes.  When you exit the shell, 
you'll be yourself again.  Also, using your own user once 
connected would simplify the use of ssh providing that your name is the 
same on your provider and your local system.

Centericq has support for; icq, msn, aim, yahoo, and irc.  When you start
centericq for the first time you are prompted for the config settings, you
use your up/down arrows to go through choices and then right arrow to done
and press enter.  Then you are taken to the account set up screen where you
can put in only aim if you wish, or put in what ever im accounts you have
and that is all you need.  When you sign in you will see which im services
are active at the top of the screen, your contact list will be one contact
list showing all your im contacts. When you press enter on one of your
contacts you will see what im service they are on in case you don't already
know. This is handy in case you have more than one name for different im
contacts.  example: I have a friend who uses Joe for both his icq nickname
and Joe for his msn name.  So on my contact list he shows up twice as "joe".
If you read the readme of centericq you will get lots of good info.

What you can do is in pppconfig go under advanced and there is an option
there.  The actual option escapes my mind right now but it is very
noticable.

You can use centericq under Linux which has support for icq, aim, msn, 
yahoo and irc all in one client.  And just so you know, you do not need 
to have a hotmail account to use msn,, you just need to register your 
email address with a passport service.
