When we set it to medium or high or none does the change take effect right away or do we have to log off linux and back on? Also we're having quite a bit of trouble with the icq servers keeping connection. We're trying micq which I like and have used before under slackware. It keeps dropping the connection but the adsl connection here is good and stable. It could be their servers but any thoughts would be appreciated. When it installs the various linux components, it then uses your preferences to write appropriate values in various configuration files. Once you reboot at the end of the installation, those settings will be in effect. Thereafter, you will not need to reboot in order to change to other preferences. There are ways to restart portions of the linux system without rebooting the entire system. In general, you'll find that you almost never need to reboot linux--unlike that other OS where rebooting is the norm. In fact, rebooting is so rare on linux, that many of us take pride in high uptime numbers. To get a sense of what that is, type 'uptime' as root and check out the stats on how long your system has been up. As I write this, I have gone to my office linux system where I find it has been up for 11 days running. Hmmm, only 11 days? Must have been some kind of electrical problem there!
