The power to cut and paste has been added to Speakup!
Have you ever needed to make note of a phone number, IP address, or long
URL displayed on the screen? Well, with the new cut and paste feature,
cutting text from the screen and pasting it into any application in any
console is now possible.
You will need to checkout the latest CVS copy of speakup to enjoy this
new feature.
There are two new default speakup keys reserved. The keypad divide key,
the one just right of the numlock key, is the mark/cut toggle.
The paste key is Insert keypad divide.
Here is how it works.
1. Move reading cursor to one end of the block of text you wish to cut
2. Press the mark/cut key. You should hear "mark".
3. Move reading cursor to other end of block of text to be cut.
4. Press the mark/cut key. You should hear "cut".
5. The cut buffer is now saved.
6. Move to a program in any console where you wish to copy the cut buffer.
7. Press the paste key. You should hear "paste" and text from
the cut buffer will be output just as if you had entered it
at the keyboard.
Note: Trailing whitespace is stripped and newlines added where appropriate.
Cut and paste has been tested successfully on Linux kernel versions
2.2.19 and 2.4.9. Enjoy!

Can I get the download sight for this?
Also, if you need to recompile the cernal is there someone who can tell me
how to do this?

I just installed rh 7.1 a week or so back and wonder how I can get the latest version of speakup installed, do I have to try and compile it in to the kernel?
How can I get the cvs version of it and use the script to check it out.
sorry, seems like very newbie questions, guess I am one again at this point.

Hi. I'm new to the list, and also to Linux. I have a couple of
questions. Does anybody happen to have a kernel compiled with Speakup, for
use with SuSE Linux v7.2? I have this distribution installed on my system,
because I wanted both Braille and speech output if possible, and my speech
synthesizer is an Apollo II. Second question. Is there a tutorial
document anywhere for the new-comer to Linux? I'm finding some of the
command set daunting, but don't want to be put off - I want to gain a good
working knowledge. I am currently downloading the ISO images of Slackware
8.0, and am hoping to download Debian as well. But I'm attracted to SuES
because A - I already own the complete Professional package on CD and DVD,
and B it has braille support integrated right out of the box, and I feel
that companies which are prepared to consider the needs of the visually
impaired user deserve our support.

If you're downloading slackware 8 isos,
then you will find very good speakup documentation on the install cd.
I also imagine they're available from the speakup sight.

Couple of options here. You can repartition your hard drive for space for a
couple of Linux's such as Slackware 8, and Suse, and use Lilo to switch
them.
Another and most practical suggestion is to install the Suse version of the
kernel source, patch it with Speakup, and rebuild.
Suse Braille support is pretty cool, and I almost thought about going with
it, but I don't as of yet have a Braille Display.

The installer is reasonable with Braille, but it doesn't as yet speak. I
have contacted the author of SuSE B-Linux, suggesting that he consider
following Slackware into including this in the distribution. This done,
SuSE would certainly be attractive to many more, as it would offer both
speech and Braille output.

The suggestion of patching the SuSE kernel with Speakup appeals to me, and
I have considered it. However, I am finding that, because I don't know my
way around the operating system yet, I am not sure how to proceed. I've
read the installation document for Speakup on the site, but as the
documentation states, it is assumed that you have some kernel building
experience, which I do not.

Yeah, but I have some bad sectors on my 4Gig drive on this old 200MHZ box
and when I use Partition Magic to partition the drive, it won't go around
these few bad sectors and partition the drive. Trying to find a good
source of an inexpensive 6 to 10 gig drive to replace but don't want to
spend a lot as con't see the point. Egghead is going under and can't find
one there for now.
Anyone know any good source for cheap but fully warranteed HDs or how I
can brute force this silly partitioning issue and circumvent the bad
sectors/clusters?
I really am chomping at the bit to get up and running with linux.

CDW has a 15 GB Western Digital for $86.93 plus S&H. That seems pretty
good to me. In all honesty, I have found that the local computer stores
have pretty good deals most the time as well.

Partition Magic has an option to check and mark the bad sectors. Or, you
mark them unusable with scandisk before repartitioning with PM.

Yep, you will have to get the kernel source tree from ftp.kernel.org
or one of its mirrors and use the checkout script to get speakup once
you have unpacked the tar ball.

Hello all.
So I went to the speakup web site and downloaded all the stuff I could
find for Devian. Now I have Redhat 7.1 and what I guess is Devian 2.88 and
I got the Devian because of the stuff I saw that said it does a better job
of importing drivers and applications, but I really have no idea if that is so.
Disturbing though is that I went to the web site I saw on the Speakup site
for Devian and it does not exist as best I can tell. I went to
www.devian.org and got some domain registration web site. So I need to
know where to find the docs for installation and beyond. Who knows where I
can find them and if it really makes any difference between installing
Devian or Redhat? I note that the Devian distribution as best I can tell
at the speakup site is only 641 megs or something like that along with
other files like drivers and another 15 meg file that I have not figured
out. I also noted that the boot image file (I guess) is 20K bigger than a
1.44MB diskette can handle? So I might be missing a whole iso from Devian
since Redhat has two giant images?
I would appreciate any advice on what I need to do to install Devian and
where to go to get mor3e information and if I have the files I need that I
downloaded from the speakup site?

Perhaps the problem is that you want debian with a B (not a V). If you try
the same web site correctly spelled it should work. If not, then the
problem is in the DNS server you are using.

The debian cd image with speakup can be found at
ftp://linux-speakup.org/pub/speakup/disks/debian/debian-2.2r2-speakup.iso
>From there you can install rev2 of potato. It is likely that you will
want to update from there to woody. a sources.list file in the /etc/apt/
dir should be updated to reflect this desired change.
#sources.list
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian woody main contrib
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US woody/non-US main contrib
Then you must run apt-get update. This will update your package info to
the latest woody info. doing a apt-get dist-upgrade will then update all
of your packages.
