It's official. Slackware is now officially supporting speakup thanks to
Raul calecos. (probably not spelling his last name correctly.) For now,
the 2.2 kernels are supported, now if we can get the 2.4s to work. This
makes Slackware the first of the big distros to have screen access from
bootup to shutdown. Cudos also to Matt Cambel for getting zipspeak
together. That showed us that speakup could really work in a distro.
Um, if you can't already tell, I'm excited.
Cheers,
Joshua Lambert

Speakup should compile fine with the 2.4 series kernels for the slackware
distro. I'm happy to see speakup finally being included in to at least one
of the standard distributions of linux.
I don't really use slackware anymore for my linux activities, but it was
my starting point nad I loved the way things were done with that
distribution. It was and still is the only linux distribution I know that
can be installed via serial port login for those not having synths
supported by speakup.

Hi folks. I urge all of you to try these kernel boot images to make sure
they will work with your synthesizer. I have a doubletalk, speakout and
transport which I've tested tis on and it works fine. You can get these
currently from
ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-current/bootdsks.144
The files are called speakup.i and speakup.s. The default synthesizer is
none so you have to give it a kernel loader line like this:
speakup_synth=xxx where xxx is the name of your synthesizer. dtlk txprt
spkout etc.
ps: My last name is g a l l e g o s *big grins*
