Debian package updating reminder please

Debian package updating reminder please

Hi

Could someone just remind me of the command line commands for telling Debian
read the packages available on the CDs?  As well as, the command line to
install particular packages?  Is there a standard set of packages to install
on a new installation?

Hi:

Assuming /etc/apt/sources.list is configured the way you want it, all you
have to do is:

apt-get update

to refresh the package list.  For CD's, apt should prompt you for each CD
if necessary.  To install a package or packages, type:

apt-get install packagename1 packagename2 ...

Note that packagename doesn't include the version number (e.g. bsdgames,
not bsdgames-2.9-3).

Hi, you use the
apt-cdrom program to catalog your CD ROMs.  To install a package, use
apt-get install <package name>
I use dselect to get the package name.  Most of the time, I just use dselect.
One thing which helps with dselect, is to park your reading cursor on
the line which shows the status of the selected package.

With a new system, you might want to use 
tasksel.
This program installs all the packages needed for particular tasks.
