I'm setting up a Slackware 7.1 computer for a blind relative who wants
to try Speakup and Linux. I have compiled 2 custom kernels, the only
difference between them is one has speakup (ver. 010a) the other doesn't. I have booted the speakup kernel once, everything worked very well. Since then I have not been able to get past the message "Loading speakup......." at which point the computer hangs. I checked the obvious things like making sure the DecTalk Express is powered up and plugged in securely.

There is no /etc/speakup.conf file because I can't find what options should go in it, is that file required or will it use defaults? What am I doing wrong please? Note that the second kernel (without speakup) boots just fine. The kernel version is 2.2.18 on a P133 with 48Megs of ram. The System.map file was copied from /usr/src/linux to /boot/System.map where the old map file was located.

Thanks,
dm suthern

Hi Duane:

You're doing the right stuff. /etc/speakup.conf is not needed, and is in
fact only of any use if you have loadspk and point it at it. And its use
has now been depricated. Speakup will use sensible defaults.

Speakup 0.10A had trouble detecting some synths. I'd suggest running the
checkout script that's with speakup 0.10A on a fresh kernel tree and
compile the latest CVS, as a number of changes have been made, one of which
was synth detection.

Geoff.

Duane,
You may want to consider using the cvs version of speakup. See Kirk's
recent note about starting with a fresh kernel tree and saving your
.config file. The CVS version will allow you to compile a single kernel
and start it with or without speakup through the use of lilo.

chris,
I should know what CVS is since I've seen it mentioned in so many places but I don't. Will find out though, thanks for the tip.

You're right, I found the answer in an old post from William Acker. I added the line;

append="speakup_synth=dectlk speakup_ser=0"

to /etc/lilo.conf under the speakup kernel, ran "lilo" and now it will boot every time. Thank you, sir.

IMHO this beats the **** out of emacspeak! My thanks to the authors.
