Hi listers! Did everybody try to compile a 2.4.0 talking kernel for the
Apollo 2 synth, with Speakup 0.10A? I had a bad surprise in trying to do
that! I'm using R.H. 7.0. The patching procedure completes with no problem,
and when the system is rebooted, the synth is correctly detected. The
tragedy is that no word is spoken! A sighted friend of mine says it seems
that the system is not able to talk to the Apollo device.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Regards
Michela

Hi:

Speakup 0.10 saw a rather radical driver rewrite. During this process,
some things broke. Some have been discovered and fixed, some obviously
have not. In my case, the transport driver did not work until we actually
altered some driver code. The thing is that some supported synths are used
by only a few people, and therefore problems can take awhile to show up.

Kirk is of course the resident guru on synth driver code, though Jim might
also know enough to help out. Kirk is quite unwell at the moment so he
won't be able to troubleshoot this for at least the next few days.

Geoff.

just curious-- why is there both an accent SA and a Transport driver
anyway? Does using the Transport driver improve the speech quality at all
over use of the Accent driver?

Hi:

OK, the transport can work either in accent or porttalk mode. I actually
run a transport emulator which only emulates the transport in porttalk
mode. Thus, a transport driver was needed. As for which works better for
real transports, I don't know.

Geoff.

Hi.

I've used a transport for a whole lot of years, and I can tell you
that yes, the transport driver is better. At least on my
transport. Admittedly, I've got what must be a very early rom version,
but I find the accent mode on the Transport's not really very
good. Porttalk is a lot ore useful.

The artic transport can run in 2 modes:
Porttalk which it does properly,
and accent that it does badly.
The internation under the accent driver is rather flat; strange things happen with
achronyms and punctuation and the accent command set has higher overhead.
Anyone who has used a transport in accent mode under JFW will note
the lack of internation, the stupid slowdowns and other silliness.

In porttalk mode, the transport behaves itself a lot better.
Also, the porttalk (transport emulator) that Geoff uses on the Eureka
only emulates porttalk and not accent.
The reason for this is that the shutup code for the accent is a multi-character code
and for technical reasons it is difficult to hook the serial interrupts on the
64180 so porttalk it is with the control-x shutup code.

Regards, Kerry.
