I would start by reading the CDR HOWTO; sorry, can't remember the exact
spelling. I remember reading through it and it was very detailed on how to
do it and what programs to use. Slackware comes with both CD and CDR
utility packages.
Oh, ceperanoia (I hope I am spelling this right) is intended for cd
ripping but I haven't any personal experience yet with it.

I'd suggest a google search for a program called "LAME" or "NotLAME" for the
MP3 ecoding part, it's a command line utility, and looks like it'd be mostly
synth-friendly, besides being (n)curses-based and using internet-style
"smileys" for the status output.
and as said before, cdparanoia is great for the "rip" part of the process, I
managed to figure it out in less than 5 minutes.

Hi Deedra
If I remember correctly you are using Debian? You can install there A B C
D E package abcde which will use all of the tools one would need to do
such things. It's really quite nice. Install it and have fun.

I have a question. In the original post someone wanted to rip CD into
another format to convert to mp3. Is it possible to just load a CD into
my CDROM drive and copy a CD song to my harddrive into a mp3 format
without having to rip a CD? I do not own a CD burner. But would love to
turn my PC into a personal jukebox. I'm getting tired of reaching for my
many CD's to play my favorite music. Thanks in advance
Rodney

Well, you still need to rip them as that is the process to extract the
content from the CD. I don't know about cdparanoia, but most rippers I've
had any dealing with extract the content and leave it as a .wav file on
the hard disk. You most definitely would want to convert these .wav files
to mp3 or ogg to save space. Mp3's are on average one tenth the size of
the .wav counterpart.
