Hi list. My name is Ameer Armaly, and I'm a newbe to linux. I've never successfully loaded linux before, for reasons forgotten. Anyway, I tried it again, but now I have windows xp which doesn't support real mode dos, so a boot floppy was needed. I wrote a bood disk wit windows rawwrite. It booted with "boot:", after which I hit enter without typing anything. It sat for about five minutes, saying "mounting root...". Does anybody know a way to help? Also, is zipspeak updated to the latest speakup and slackware?

I'm not sure about your problem without more info, but yes, Zipspeak has been updated to Speakup 1.0 and Slackware 8.0. It's been on the Speakup site for a few months now.

Hi. Slakware is a distribution. The distribution you are trying to use is zipspeak. I don't know much about zipspeak, but someone else might. You have to type something like linux speakup_synth=<synth>, where synth is your synthesizer. For example, if you have dectalk express, you type dectlk for the synthesizer. If you have doubletalk, you would type dtlk instead of dectlk. Hope this helps.

I think I know why. I use XP, and have ntfs for my file system. How would I go about creating a dos partition if I don't have fdisk? Is there another program to do so?
Thanks

Hi. First, xp and linux can't coexist on the same machine. They just create problems. You're better off getting something like win98 to coexist with linux. This is because it uses phat32, and things like the debian installation support phat32 for mounting hd filesystems when installing rescue.bin and the bass system packages.

This is just plain wrong. xp and linux can coexist just fine. Don't listen
to this advice.
I don't have xp, but this is where you would go for windows 2000 and it
should be somewhat like this. Go to the Control Panel. Then go to
Administrative Tools. Then you want to open Computer Management. In the
left pane you will find something for Disk Management. I doubt it will
allow for non-destructive resizing.
Now before going too far, if you have a zip drive and floppy you can set
this up without needing to create a dos partition on your hard
drive. Format a zip disk with fat. Then put the files onto that disk. You
will also bootable floppy with the dos level drivers.
Another option is to add an inexpensive disk and make set it up with a fat
partition.

Hi Kurk.
The only thing I meant was that if you were installing Debian, Debian does not contain a modulefor natively supporting NTFS, which I believe is the default filesystem for xp. However, if you found a way, like you said, creating he phat partitions with a dos-level disk and/or zip disk, then there should be no problems.

Yeah but can't you partition off a piece of the HD for Linux such that it
has it's own format? I was going to do this with my new Notebook and now
you tell me! along with no lousy serial port! Guess I'll have to tear down
the whole lousy mess and put Win98/SE on there and I didn't want to do that.
sigh ...

You can get partition magic to partition your drive. There is an option to
create a fat or fat32 partition. Email me and I'll tell whare to get it.
