Hi all, I am in the middle of installing slackware 8.0 on my older machine.
Right now, I am at the menu where I should select witch kernal I would like
to use for Linux. Well, my question is this. No matter what I do, I can
not get out of the menu. I am trying to select the first choice which is

boot disk use the kernal from the installation boot disk

When I try this I press enter with speakup saying the fraise above.

Second question, how do I make win 98 boot again on this machine? I have
not rebooted the machine since I started the install of Linux. I am a frad
to because I do not know how to get back to windows.

Thanks for any help. Just wondering how to tell slackware that I am wanting
the boot disk option. When the menu first came up I had pressed enter
thinking that it would except the default choice witch was

boot disk use the kernal from the installation boot disk

Thanks for nay help.

After you press enter on that first option, your floppy should spin, and you'll be dropped back into that menu. Arrow down to the last choice which should exit the menu. This should be correct, although I can't remember exactly how that particular section of the installlll goes.

After you get through the kernel menu, you will install lilo. Once lilo is installed and the setup is over, when you reboot, type "linux" at the prompt that comes up, or hit enter to get into windows. Feel free to ask if this is not clear or if you have more questions. Linux installs can be scary sometimes, especially if you haven't done one before.

should I go back in make the windows partition bootable and the Linux not?

Thanks for your help. I just wish speakup would do a better job with menus.

I did this and I am still stuck in the menu. If I shut the machine down and
restart the install, will it mess up windows?

That shouldn't be a bad start but the slackware settup script should also
take you through a lilo configuration step. Here is where you can specify
where your dos/windows partition is so you can include it. For best
results, choose /hda (outside of any specific partition) for the location
of the boot image. That's what I did and I have a dual boot system on
this machine.

After that, you may want to review the basic features of your kernel and
what you actually need for your environment and begin looking into
recompiling a new kernel with the latest version of speakup. The version
distributed with slackware isn't too old but isn't quite to version 1.0
yet. It is a good starting point though.

I have two drives /hda, and /sda.
I have "windows m e" on /hda, and zipspeak on /sda.
I want to install a full version of Linux on /sda.
Where do I put lilo, or better yet what is the best way to set this up as a
duel boot system.
I need to keep windows on the system because of some projects I am working
on for my job.
Any suggestions?

No, they should both be made bootable.

If you shut the machine during the install, it won't mess up windows, but you will have to do the linux install all over again.

What exactly happens when you hit enter on the boot disk kernel option which is the first one?

It echos the screen back. I decided to bail out of the install and start
from scratch. Now I am dealing with a system that will not boot. I am
putting the boot floppy (the one linux asked me to ake). I decided to put
lilo on a floppy. When I got to this option, it never prompted me for a
disk. Will the boot floppy have it on it (again the one Linux asked me to
put in)?

a fillow up on the below message. I followed the instruction from the
manual when rebooting the machine at the lilo prompt type
Linux speakup_synth=acntpc
I did this and nothing happened. I then tried just typing Linux and again
nothing then I tried typing speakup_synth=acnt nothing finally I pressed
enter. The system booted with out speech why? Do you think it is because
lilo is not ont he boot disk slackware told me to make? Could it be that
speakup is not on the boot floppy? Finally, How do I get my machine to boot
in Linux. It is booting in windows fine witch I am very happy about.

The best place to put lilo is in the master boot record of your primary or boot drive.

You use "cfdisk" and toogle the boot flag of that partition.

Hmmmm, all this sounds a bit abnormal for a slackware install. Which boot floopy are you referring to, the one that you started the install with, or one that you made during the install. If it is one that you made during the install, then it will have lilo on it. If it is the one that you started the install with, then it has lilo on it too, but the lilo on that disk doesn't know anything about your windows.

First, what are you trying to boot from, your hard drive, or a boot disk that you made during the install?

will this effect the windows partition? Do I need to go through the entire

I am talking about the boot floppy slackware asked for during the install.
Would this have info about windows on it? Like I said if I press enter when
the disk stops moving Linux will boot (with out speakup).

I am trying to boot from the boot floppy I made during the install. If I
have the disk out, the system will boot windows.

This may or may not effect your windows partition depending on if you know what you're doing, and how carefull you are. You do not need to go through the slackware install again if you've got it installed correctly, since making the partition bootable doesn't effect the data on it.

How do you know that linux is actually what is being booted? If this is the disk that you made during the install, then the lilo on it should be aware of your windows.

In that case, try something like:
"mount speakup_synth="xxxx where xxxx is your synth. Notice that the only thing replaced here is linux with mount.

well... I am guessing it is Linux because it sure is not windows. The hard
drive sounds different while it is booting when I just press enter (with the
boot disk is in the drive). The hard drive will crunch for a little while
and then stop making no more noise. No speakup. When I when thought he
install procedure, the cpeak_in.txt said that I need to type Linux
speakup_synth=acntpc when it came to booting the system. During the lilo
config process, it had asked if I wanted to put lilo on a sooper block of my
hard drive or if I wanted to put lilo on a boot floppy. I chose the floppy
option. The system never asked me for a floppy, it kept on with eh install.

You probably don't have much choice. If your computer suports booting from
sda then hda in that order, you could put it on sda. Otherwise it will
have to go on hda. as long as your lilo.conf has information on your other
system it will boot just fine. I have installed between 5 and 10 setups
to dual boot. Every time it was as simple as installing linux after having
a working windows system. Every install package I am familiar with
automatically puts the info into lilo.conf so the system can dual boot.

well, that did it!!! Should I leave the system booting from a floppy?
Thanks for your help. I guess now comes the fun part of learning my new
system right?

Well, that depends on your preference. If you want to boot from the hard drive, run "liloconfig" to set things up, and run "lilo" afterwords to install lilo to your hd. If you want to boot into windows right away like you're used to doing, then boot linux from a floppy.

I would use /hda, assuming /hda is the drive your BIOS boots with. When
doing a liloconfig, it should ask you if you want to put the boot image on
a partition of your choice or if you want it on the "master boot record"
of the drive and using that option will result in your lilo.conf file
having an entry like boot=/hda. Also in liloconfig, you will be asked to
enter the items you want to include in lilo. I would setup the windows
one first, followed by the linux option. I say this because lilo, by
default, will use the first entry in lilo.conf to boot your machine; the
machine will boot into windows if no choices are made during the lilo boot
prompt.

I would strongly encourage you to read "man lilo" and "man lilo.conf" to
learn all the exciting options of lilo. You can get lilo to work really
well for you that way. Slackware's liloconfig script is just a beginning.
After liloconfig is done, take a look at /etc/lilo.conf to see what got
created; that can be edited freely once you understand the additional
options you might want/need.

Thank you for the below information. It sure makes lilo make more sense.
