I am now getting started

Hello group,
I am new to linux.
I have dedicated a removable hard drive on my system to use with linux.
I have downloaded the speakup program and placed a copy of it onto my
removable drive.
I once purchased a copy of linux for about 6 dollars, but someone on a list
told me it was not the correct version of linux to work with speakup.
Can someone send me a link to where I can download the correct version of
linux?
Also, I sure could use some instructions on getting started.

   Speakup will work with *every* distribution of linux. Linux is linux, that's one of the best things about it. What works on one work's on all.

   The question is whether there are speech-enabled boot disks for the distribution in question, so you could do a complete install with speech. What distribution do you have? There are bootdisks currently for debian, red hat, and slackware.

Hi, I would strongly think about Bill's modified Red Hat 7.2 distribution.
you can get it at:
ftp://linux-speakup.org/pub/speakup/disks/redhat/7.2/
Depending on how busy the server is it may tell you that the server is
busy.I usually grabbed the stuf late at night and avoided those problems.
Note disk one and two is quite large. If you are not able to download the
disks let me know, and for a small shipping fee I'll make you a copy of the
isos on cd, and ship it to you.

Your advice will probably get me around my startup troubles, as well.  I
didn't realize this was a full-fledged RH7.2 distribution.  Two questions,
though:

Do I just burn all these ".iso" files onto cds?  I'll be using Adaptech
Easy Cd Creater under Win2K.  

I now RH7.0".  Does the Install in the modified 7.2 have an
"upgrade" option?  or will I have to overwrite my existing install?

Hi, Dave:

There are some good enhancements in 7.2 over 7.0. I would also suggest 
that you're better off using an installation that already knows you will 
be using speech. It is likely that the 7.0 you have doesn't have speakup 
support because that isn't provided by Redhat yet.

The RH7 install I did was just out-of-the-box RH.  It couldn't possibly
know about speakup.  In fact, I'd say it was optimized for x-11 and
gnome.  Why, do you think, I've had all this agony of kernel patching and
errors:-)?  Maybe it's best to chuck it all and start with a clean,
speakup-aware setup?

One thing for sure, this won't be your last installation, so I guess 
there's no harm in picking up a little experience. It is the best teacher, 
after all.

One question first. Do you have an install working in some fashion or 
other? And, is there a network connection working? Reason I ask is that 
any number of folks here could slide on over into your system and tweak 
you up quickly if you do have a working install and a good net connection, 
preferably broadband of some kind.

Otherwise, I'd go with the reinstall.

The good news is that once you get a talking system going with speakup, 
how ever many times you reinstall for whatever reasons, you'll never go 
through the initial troubles again.

Hi there!!

Yes, I'm running a RH 7.0 box now.  My Internet connect is KT&T
Broadband.  To get speech, I'm using my BNS 640 as a terminal, by way of 
the brlterm program.  

Fortunately, the are no valuable data on the Linux side of the wall,
yet.  If a new install is required, I can do it.  This machine has Win2K 
and Linux.  I'd like to keep it this way (my job requires Win2K.  For
ease and reliability, I boot the Linux from a floppy.

lynx and ssl

can some one tell me where i am going wrong 
with this line.
"./configure --with-ssl=/usr/local/ssl"
the error message that i am getting is that it can't link with the ssl
library.
i compiled openssl and the libs are in /usr/local/ssl/lib
i have tried ./configure --with-ssl=/usr/local/ssl/lib
and i get the same error.

Hi
   First, put /usr/local/lib in /etc/ld.so.conf. The ld.so.conf file is just a listo of directories, one per line, which the linker is to use. After you've done that, run ldconfig. Finally, run configure with no opts, it'll find SSL automatically.

I found I had to reboot before the openssl would work
because I wanted it for licq as well but if that's not the way to go
about it, then I'd like to know a better one please
but give that a go randy and see how you go.

i am now using lynx 2-8-5
the ssl package is 
openssl-0.9.1c
first compile the ssl part
then compile the lynx using the ssl switch when you do the configure

Cable Modem

I know this subject has been addressed but everyone has just sort of
danced around it.

I've signed up for Comcast @home  cringe! but it's the only way I can get
broadband into my house for now.

It uses dhcp and some other settings which for wind blows you'd configure
through the control panel and the internet connection wizard.

Does anyone have a script or whatever it would take to fill-in these
values for  a tcp/ip  dhcp connection and lan etc?
You do not need to use any proprietary software with @home as appearently
the cable modem itself has it's own firmware to see your computer so it
seems logical to me it wouldn't care what the computer O/S is provided the
computer can talk to this sort of connection.

I'm not in a rush as haven't even gotten around to setting up my Linux
box.  But any pointers would be helpful as I see there are other Cable
Modem users on here.

using that terrible gui and log into member services.  go to support and
you will be able to get all the static info you need such as your ip
address, subnet mask and everything.  They say they change it but I've
been with them for over a year and it has remained the same.  I disabled
dhcp for other reasons.  I'm sure though that there is a way to deal
with dhcp in linux.

Amanda,

Chances are that your ip address is static even if given to the computer
via dhcp. Check your ip address over the next several days to see if it
stays still. If so, you can copy down the info you need from winipcfg. If
not, still copy down the dns servers from winipcfg. The thing you need to
make dhcp work with @home is simply the computer name.

You must pass the computer name to dhcpcd to get an ip address
back. Sorry, I don't know where to stick this info so it works
automatically.

second "static IP" for an additional $6.95 per month.  Go figure!  A
little mixing of terminology to obscure the real truth.  Another complaint
I have about excite@home is that they won't allow you to use it for
telecommuting and I find that to be an accessibility issue especially for
those who are persons with disabilities because we all pay for our own
broadband service no matter what we use it for.  But that's not an issue
we  need to discuss here.  DSL providers don't care or seem to want to
prevent  you from using your broadband connection for accessing your
employer's network.

First, the second IP is just that. You can then put two computers on the
internet. Second, there is nothing to keep you from using your @home
connection to telecomute. They do not block any ports nor do they
routinely monitor anything. As for the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) I just
checked it. The only thing that could possibly be construed to prohibit
using your service for telecomuting is that "The service may not be used
for comercial purposes." I have never heard of such being used to say you
can't connect to your corperate lan via vpn.

Key thing here: relax and breath. If you don't cause harm, they don't give
a rat's ass. Technically, I am hosting a server. But nobody has said
anything over the past three years I have been doing so. I telnet to my
home computer from work regularly. In the next week I will telnet from my
brother's pc. Nobody cares. Just protect your machine and don't let it be
a platform for someone to launch an attack. Don't try to run some
industrial grade server. Not only will performance suck with 128Kbit
upstream, it will piss someone off.

Do use your internet connection for any person (including doing your
personal work) thing you want. Just don't think you have a colocated
server.

I just said "./configure --with-ssl" and it figured out where the SSL 
directory was on its own if I remember.  Of course, I also added a number 
of other configuration options, so have a look at your options before building.

Oh, yes. I usually make ahabbit of clean installs of things. I'd just burn
the red Hat 7.2 distribution off of the Speakup ftp site, and clean install.
That way you are sure to get not only the speakup kernel, but the speakup
keymap of your choice, and I found configuring x for sited users was much
easier as well.

There isn't a "speakup aware" installation per se. If you had problems
with patching the kernel chances are you didn't have the full kernel
source available. The default kernel source for redhat was not the full
source in previous versions. I would imagine it is the same now. Check
with Bill for info on this and how to correct the situation. Another
option is to just download the full kernel source and go from there.

Hi,

My probrems with patching the kernel extend to kernels from
<http://www.kernel.org>.  Thanks for your suggestions.  I have since
downloaded and tried installing Bill's RH7.2.  The cds I burned from the
downloaded images are no good.  The installer keeps saying it can't find a
Readhat cd.  Just for grins, I put my RH7.0 cd in, the installer could
find that.  Maybe I'll try an install from the net?

If the ISO images are on the same machine that you're installing to, you 
can use a boot disk and install from the HDD.  Just tell the installer 
what partition and directory the images are in.

Amanda, maybe Excite@home is providing you with a good thing, and that
is by putting up such an obstacle, you have the perfect reason to tell
them where to put it!  After all, one can not be to careful when
telecommuting.  We all have heard horror stories of security breaches
with people using cable access, and perhaps Excite@home is doing a
little CYA.  

Where I work, the security is very tight, and so far, if you want to
telecommute, you need to sign away everything including your first 2
born, before you are considered for access.
