Hi gang. I'm trying to get the alsa to work for the Toshiba tecra8100
which uses the yamaha opl3 built-in sound driver. My question is if
anyone is using this can you send my a copy of your /etc/modules.conf as
I seem to not be albe to get this to work. Also, I've searched the net
for someone else who has configured this and can't find any but in case
anyone knows of a web site that has this information I'd appreciate
this.
Thanks.

Hi Raul. I'm using a Toshiba Satalite cdt4210, and it has an opl3sax
chip in it. The chip works fine under Windows, but I haven't been able
to get it to work with the Alsa drivers. My klooge was to use the Alsa
cs4231 driver, which at least lets me play sounds, but the recording
quality stinks. It also doesn't sound very good using Speak freely on
the reflecter. The oss drivers in the 2.2 kernels were a bit better,
they at least recognized the chip properly, but didn't give proper
control over the master volume. You might try the Alsa 0.9beta drivers,
and see if you have better results. No promises though.

Hi guys. Well I set the PCM to 84% unmute and the Wave to 100% unmute.
I copied the windows logon sound and called it win.wav and typed 'aplay
win.wav' and hear a little crackling as the sound presumibly starts then
as the sounds finishes the crackling stops. So something is there. I
have a feeling it still has to do with my volume settings but I'm not
completely sure any more. I'm using the alsa 0.9.0beta9 version. They
installeed fine and the sound driver is loading fine I checked this with
lsmod.

Hi
Did you try the snd-card-ymfpci driver? As I recall the system in the Tecra 8100 is a yamaha DSXG (YMF7XX) chipset, exactly the chipset I've got in my satellite pro 4340.

Thanks to everyone who responded. Yes the driver below is the one that
is correct for this laptop. Everythong seems to load fine per lsmod and
the output of /etc/rc.d/alsa start
Now if I try to play for example the windows_logon.wav file I get a high
piercing yet quiet tone from the speakers.
I type 'aplay win.wav' and get the following output.
root@gallegos:/usr/bin# aplay /tmp/win.wav
Playing WAVE '/tmp/win.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 22050
Hz, Stereo
This piercing sound is what I'm guessing to be my mixer settings to not
be set correctly even though I've tried:
amixer sset Master 100 unmute
amixer sset pcm 100 unmute
amixer sset Wave 100 unmute
None of those seems to help though.
I'm definately making progress but not quite there yet. The asound.conf
file from speakup's ftp site is outdated with these drivers it seems so
I have not used it.

Hi
Have you tried any other players, like sox's play or playing an MP3 or vorbis file? I've consistantly had trouble with aplay with certain wav files for some reason. And my experiences with aplay aren't limited to this card. Also, lower your wave control to around 13%, keep the master and pcm at 100%, otherwise you'll get super distortion. Alternative, you can lower your master to about 88%, the PCM to about 81%, and keep the wave at 100%. The disadvantage to lowering your master and pcm as that if your card has a 3D function (mine does), and you want to use it, you'll get a lot of distortion. Thus I recommend the first mixer settings which worked fine for me. Of course you can fine-toon them even more.

ok raul,,
instead of setting your pcm at 100%,
try setting it to 84% no higher.
the reason is as far as I understand it, the pcm is kind of like a drive
or gain control and too much gain causes distortion.

Great advice. Thinking of it, my card does nothing but make obnoxious
noise at full volume. There is a heavy reliance on external
amplification. If memory serves correct, there is an external setting for
the volume on that computer as well. If you need more volume, try
adjusting there.

hi all,
well it appears that we can't use gold pass for real player with linux
from what i have found out the down load version of real player
that works with there gold pass service has to have
a serial number in there program,
well because we use linux that cuts us out!
i had to unsubscrive
from there gold pass service today because it just would not work
it just has to have there program using there serial number!
thanks to all
randy

Sorry, this doesn't follow. Just because you use linux doesn't mean they
couldn't put a serial number in there. They may have not bothered with
this functionality. I would suggest that if you are interested, you
contact Real Networks and express that interest. They exist for one
reason: to make money. If the cost of modification of the linux client
will pay off with enough subscribers they will probably follow that money.

hi, kirk,
i will write them conserning linux soon.
i really got the feeling that the person wthat i was talking with on the
phone didn't care if it worked or not.
when i told them that it did not work they didn't even ask why.
but maybe if i write a message it will get to the right people.
thanks
randy
