Hi. I can't remember if this is on the list of things to be worked on
or if it's possible. Is it a good idea to have a speech dictionary so
that words that our lovely synthesizers pronounce funny can sound a
little better? I'm sure that a lot of us who have used synthesizers for
years are used to how things are said but what about the new user? If
something like this could be implimented it could be placed in
/proc/speakup/speech_dic or something like that. Then have the format
be something like 'oldpronounciation=new pronounciation' per line.

It would seem to me (an outsider looking in) that having a way to send
this into your synth would be better. I know that many synths have
internal exceotion dictionaries, but few ever get used.

Heck, I want to hear my name pronounced correctly. I've used speech synths
for more years than I care to admit to, but I'm still not used to hearing
my own hardware say my name wrong.
Exceptions dictionaries are a gift. I hope we have one someday in the not
too distant future.

Did you ever hear how the Kurzweil Reading Machine pronounced Ray
Kurzweil's name? I would have thought that would be the first thing he
would fix.

His machine did it like that too, but the man himself called it Kurz
while.
It was a real breakthrough when it was new, but it left a lot to be
desired. I recall my first visit to the machine in the K.U. Library. Cindy
and I were shown how to make it gho, and were given a piece of paper to
read with the words to the Star Spangled Banner printed on it. We both
clearly heard the machine say,
"Oh say can you see
By the dawns early light
What so proudly we hailed
At the toilets last cleaning."
