Hi. Problem when installing Slackware 8.0. I have a completely
unpartitioned hard drive in my system, which would be /dev/hdc - meaning
that it is drive number 3. CFDisk and Fdisk will not allow me to write to
this drive, to prepare a Linux partition. Any ideas why this could
be? CFDisk says I do not have permition to write to this drive, and FDisk
says there are no free sectors. I have to say that the SuSE partitioning
tools seem much more intelligent, it handles it with no problem
whatsoever. Assuming I cannot get this to work, is there a tool within
Slackware which would allow me to shrink a FAT32 Windows partition? Better
still, does anybody else run SuSE with speech? If so, could they create me
a boot disk image?
Kind regards, Gordon Smith.

Are you absolutely sure
the drive you're trying to partition is in fact
/dev/hdc and not /dev/hda for example?
If you have a fresh unpartioned drive in your box, then I don't
see why cfdisk would give you a problem with it.

I forgot to ask if you're specifying to cfdisk
that you want to work with the /dev/hdc drive?
By default, cfdisk uses /dev/hda for all operations.
To specify the drive, simply do "cfdisk hdc" for example.

Hi
The third drive? That isn't really how linux does things. Where is it connected to? Primary master/slave or secondary master/slave? This is important, as linux doesn't go in a drive1, drive2,and drive3 manner. INstead, it goes like this:
/dev/hda, /dev/hdb: primary master, primary slave
/dev/hdc, /dev/hdd: secondary master, secondary slave
etc. In fact, usually /dev/hdc is used by an IDE cdrom. Try this command on the boot disk to find out where the drive is:
dmesg | grep -i hd
You'll see your first drive found as hda, the the second hard drive will be found somewhere. Note this will also tell you where your cdrom resides. Not having permission to write to a drive usually occurrs when trying to partition a read-only media drive, like a cdrom.

Hello there Gordan,
This is Saqib Shaikh; I wrote the Speakup documentation that comes with
Slackware. Firstly I agree that SuSE did something very good by including a
braille screen reader within their distribution. However, there are a few
points to bear in mind:
1. You have 7 CDs and a DVD but there is only half a CD of console apps!
Most of the extra stuff, like VMWare demo, StarOffice, RealPlayer, Adobe
Acrobat and the list goes on, are only accessible through X. I still think
SuSE is a good distro, but also remember that SuSE started off as Slackware
with RPM support, and then they began adding lots of X stuff. In short
Slackware is good especially to start off with. In terms of partitioning
your hard disk have you tried:
cfdisk /dev/hdc
That is pass the disk name as a parameter.
Email again if you require further info.

Ok, as for newbie docs:
www.slackware.com
holds a good book which is an excellent way just to learn linux, regardless
of distribution.
www.dsl.org/
contains the Linux CookBook, another really good EBook.
finally, try linuxdoc.org for the traditional howtos/faqs/guides.

I have 5 drives in my box, and the drive I'm trying to use is drive #
3. Which would, as I understand it, be /dev/hdc. Suse see it, and will
use it just fine. Slackware, on the other hand, doesn't want to know.

Yeah, I tried all that. Just comes back and tells me I don't have
permission to write to that drive. FDisk tells me there are no free
sectors, when the drive has no partitions on it at all, is 100% free, in
other words.

Hi Gordon
You didn't say you had two controllers. That makes life a bit different.
First off the kernel needs to have support build in for your second
controller. well really your third and fourth controller most likely. I
do believe that slackware has support for the promise controllers built in
to the bare.i boot disk. If not this could be a bit of a problem assuming
that is the kind of controller you have. In either case it is probable
that the drive that is in question is really /dev/hde.
If you need anymore help just call or write. It could get a little tricky
to set this up and boot off of that drive. Unless your thinking of
booting from a floppy the lilo config to boot this setup will prove to be a
learning experience for you.

Hi. The layout of my system is a little strange, this was necessary. It is:
Drive 1 = primary master
CD-ROM = primary slave
Drive 2 = ATA100 primary master
Drive 3 = ATA100 Primary Slave
Drive 4=ATA100 Secondary Master
Drive 5 = ATA100 Secondary slave
I have the 3 boot devices configured in my BIOS as Floppy, HD0, (Primary
Master), and HD3, (ATA100 Primary Slave). Perhaps the reason it works with
SuSE is that the installer is graphical, and it's just a case of clicking
buttons. So, based on your suggestion below, it may be that what I am
calling /dev/hdc is in reality not /dev/hdc. Hadn't occured to me
actually, so thanks for that tip.

Hi Saqib
I see your documentation on the Slackware CD, good work. I take your
points regarding SuSE. What I was thinking of may doing was obtaining
Slackware, Debian, maybe Redhat as well as SuSE. As I understand it, it
should be possible to import packages across distributions. Therefore, if
I could somehow get a SuSE kernel compiled to include Speakup, then I'd
have the best of both worlds. But I do take your point about a lot of SuSE
being X stuff, it sure is. Regarding my partitioning problem, I think
another reply to my message may hold the solution to this problem. Looks
as though it is to do with the way my system is laid out. I shall
investigate that one further I am finding this list most helpful in many
respects, so thanks to everybody who contributes. One more question if I
may. Do you know of a beginner's guide to Linux anywhere?.

I could be missing the point here, but if you have a braille display why
don't you use SuSE-BLinux? This would give you braille support and speech
support also.

Well Gordon your gonna have to do what I did on my first day of using any
sort of unix and compile your own kernel. I know it's jumping in head
first but if that's what you want your going to have to do it. Personally
my experiences with suse slackware redhat caldera corel and turbo have all
lead me to use debian. Enough of the distro war though. Unfortunately
there aren't any people on this list using suse so were probably not going
to be much help.
Let me know if you need any help. I'd be glad to give you a hand.

Hi Frank. The drive should be bootable, as SuSE works just fine with
it. Having said that, I use an external boot manager at present. But even
this won't work if my BIOS isn't set right. Yeah, my motherboard has 4
on-board IDE channels, permitting a maximum of 8 devices. But I take your
point regarding the kernels. Again, going back to SuSE, that does support
it directly. As I said in a previous message, if I could only get hold of
a kernel for SuSE with Speakup I'd be happy to stick with it.

Your supposed to be able to specify the synth that you have with the
braille program the comes with suse. Like I said before we wouldn't know how
to do that around here most likely.
If you are sticking with suse for the braille terminal program know that
braille tty is supposed to be a better program then that which ships with
suse.

It doesn't give me speech, as my speech synthesizer is not part of my
Braille display. If it were, then I'd have no problem. As I say, if I
could get a kernel compiled for SuSE, including Speakup, then problem
solved. But Braille alone is just too slow.

Well if I can work out how to compile the kernel, I'd have a go. As
another list member suggested, Slackware isn't seeing my second controller,
and of course, the additional hard drives either. So, that seems to rule
it out - unless I can find a way to shrink my Windows partition on drive 1,
without destroying the data.
>Let me know if you need any help. I'd be glad to give you a hand.
It would be good if you can point me in the direction of some place to
start looking into kernel compilation. I have the document I got from the
Speakup site, but it assumes some kernel building experience, of which I
have none.

If you can find the config file the sus kernel uses you can patch the
kernel with speakup and use makoldconfig to use your existing sus kernel
options. The only thing the config script would stop for is to ask about
speakup and what you would end up with is a kernel that works in sus as
well as having speakup in it.
I suggest downloading the checkout script to get the latest cvs patch the
put it in /usr/src/linux and typing ./checkout. Now you willhave speakup
source patched into the kernel. When you have the kernel source type:
make mrproper
then copy your old config file to /usr/src/linux/.config
now type
make oldconfig
Now all the sus specific kernel options will be taken from the existing
config file and the config script will pause to ask you if you want
speakup. say yes and y for any synth you want. once this is done type
make dep
make bzImage * note the acpital I in bzImage **
Write if you need more help on this. Compiling a kernel the first time
can be intimidating but once you have done it over and over again you get
used to it.
hth.

If suse sees this drive as /dev/hdc, then
it should be the same under slackware.
I still can't see why suse would work fine with that drive, and slackware wouldn't.

What motherboard do you have?
Is it by any chance an Abit be6-II?
If so, then the bare.i slackware boot disk doesn't
have built-in support for the hpt366 on-board controllers.

And now we can solve a huge mystery. The following *should* represent the

The first two are definately correct. But it is a certainty that your

making you specify the drive position. Suse was one of the first to
eliminate the need to understand a very easily misunderstood drive
designation.
Quite honestly, if you have a distribution installed, I would recomend
that you patch the kernel, compile and go on. I shied away from this task
for a long time. Then one day decided I had nothing better to do then
reinstall if I messed something up. The long and short is that it was
actually quite easy. In fact, it is so easy that I would recomend
everybody to compile their own kernel. Start with cutting out all the crap
in a stock kernel you don't use.
I have cut boot time significantly be eliminating the stuff in a stock
kernel that my machine doesn't use anyway. I cut it further by building in
things like network card support directly. Sure I made mistakes along the
way. I also found my own way of tracking what I have done. I discovered
that there is no need to name my kernel vmlinuz. I discovered that there
is no need to pout a softlink in the root directory to this. I discovered
that I can name my kernel to indicate the version number and date if I
choose.
You can find out a lot by playing here.

Hi Frank. I am at a loss then to know how to specify a speech synthesizer
for SuSE to use. When I installed it, it auto-detected my Braille
terminal, but nothing else. I can find only extremely poor documentation
related to SuSE B-Linux, and no mention of speech synthesis anywhere. If
you could give me a clue where to follow this up, I will be happy to do so,
and very grateful. I think I'm going to have to stick with SuSE, as
Slackware will not see my additional hard disks or I/O controller. I also
have no idea where to locate Braille TTY, so I'm sort of stuck. I
appreciate what you say about nobody else around here using SuSE, guess I'm
on my own with that, <smile>. Thanks anyway.

Hi Greg. The reason is, as I've since discovered, Slackware isn't seeing
the Raid controller on my motherboard. Hence, no additional hard
drives. SuSE has specific support for my motherboard, so it sees it
properly. I am still not sure whether it is seeing it as /dev/hdc, haven't
figured out how to check that as yet.

You can check to see what the device is quite easily. (Sorry I didn't
think of this earlier.) Simply run the command "mount" and it will list
everything that is mounted.

Hi
Based on the system layout you gave me, the drive you want to partition is /dev/hdd, not hdc which is your second drive.

Actually, all I had to do was take the time to review the initial boot-up
screen, that shows me quite clearly that the only hard drive that Slackware
is seeing is the first one. What about Debian, would that see the extra
controller? In other words, does the default kernel install it?

It would seem that Slackware is only seeing the first controller, only one
hard disk and the CD-ROM exist, as far as it is concerned.

That sounds reasonable, yeah.

As a total novice, is there somewhere I can get my hands on a step-by-step
guide to this process? I'm not frightened to try it if I have all the
necessary information to hand. As you say, if I break it, I just laugh
about it, put it down to experience, and re-install.

Got to know where to start first, <smile>.

I'm plunging around in the dark here but if you say that Slackware can't
find your rade controller, does this mean you're using SCSI drives? In this
case won't you need to use the speakup.s disk? Thanks, Saqib

Hello. Under Slackware, I can only see the primary controllers, and not
the ATA100. I am told they aren't supported under Slackware, at least with
the standard kernel. Which explains why it can't see the drives, but SuSE
can. My motherboard is specifically supported under SuSE.

Well, they're IDE drives. But actually, Windows sees the controller as an
SCSI controller, so you may have a point there.
Kind regards, Gordon Smith.

You have several choices which probably won't change anytime soon. One
would be to create your own boot disk for slackware. Another is to
compile speakup into your kernel for your curent install of suse. Those
would be the easy choices, with the latter being the most pain free. If
you are looking for some m$ tech to give you the easy answer, you will be
sorely disappointed.

No, he's probably using the speakup.i boot disk which I know for a fact doesn't recognize the ata 100 controlers. That is done with the ata100.i boot disk.
