Why use version 1.4.1 when you can use version
1.9. http://sourceforge.net/projects/ari-yahoo/

Hi Joshua, a lot of us have found that with ari-yahoo 1.9 we were unable
to backspace. Chuck has since fixed this problem, but even still the
display in 1.4.1 seems easier to follow.

Because the non-curses version is easier to deal with.

Hi Joshua -
On my system the backspace and delete keys do not work in 1.9 and when I
fix that problem I still cannot make a lot of sense of the
display. Version 1.4.1 is more limited but it works much more conveniently
for me.

There was some exchange on here a few weeks ago about ari-yahoo which
seems to work okay, although it only does one-on-one exchanges - no chat
rooms, no audio, etc.

The solution seems to be that you have to add a friend to your friends
list online with Yahoo for the first one. That creates a file on their
server and after that ari-yahoo can do it own adds and removes. Thanks to
Darcy for discovering this one.

I've noticed this as well. I dont use any later than ari-yahoo-1.4.1 for
that very reason.
obviously that is a programming issue that ari jonston will have to sort
out.

Darcy -
Is it necessary for the person you are adding to be logged onto Yahoo
Mesenger in order for your add command to work?

I take it from your comments that you do not see the error message I
referred to - "cannot add friend" or maybe it is "unable to add friend".

I have been experimenting here after having created two Yahoo ID's and
passwords, so that I can log on as one and attempt to do a /add for the
other one. Maybe the other one needs to be online for my add to work?

Hi Chuck. I've found that sometimes when adding or removing contacts,
it's necessary to quit and re-start ari-yahoo for the changes to take
effect. Also note that when you add or remove someone, you only type the
id portion of their name. You don't put the @yahoo.whatever suffix on the
end.

Shaun -
On both versions 1.4.1 and 1.9 the command you describe does not work. It
reports something like "cannot add friend". Like Darcy, the backspace key
works with 1.4.1 but not with 1.9 on my system.

There is ari-yahoo search freshmeat for it.
I can't get it to add friends but you might have more luck.

Hi, one further comment about the linux yahoo messenger client. On the
web page you'll find two versions of the program. I recommend the
non-curses version. Maybe it's just me, but with the other version, I was
unable to backspace.

Hi Chuck. There is a basic yahoo messenger client for the console called
ari-yahoo. You can find it at "http://www.ari.lusis.org/yahoo/". There's
also a source forge page for it at
"http://sourceforge.net/projects/ari-yahoo/". It's a verry limited client
and only allows the sending of instant messages. You can't use the yahoo
conferences and chat rooms with it.
