Hi all.
I'm not sure whether or not you received my last posting as I had some email issues to resolve.
my query was to find out how much drive space is required for a typical slackware installation.
I've been trying to install it on an 850 mb hard drive without much success and I fear that I need at least 1 gb for a full installation.
is this correct?
Thanks in advance,
Shaun.

Hi Shaun -
I did not see your earlier post, but until recently I used an 850 meg hard
drive for my Slackware distro, including versions up to 7.1. However, I
did not do a full install - I basically omitted emacs, the x packages, and
the gnome and kde development packages. Those are humungous. If you need
them you may need more than 850 megs.

thanks for that chuck. right at the moment I don't need x gnome or any of
that stuff but, who needs x when u can't use it <lol>
maybe someone should start on a version of speakup for those that want x
support?
would not that be an idea that can be tossed around from time to time?
I'll leave you with that thought.
Shaun..

A quick check of the slakware site indicates that you can install a
minimal setup with 50MB of space. It doesn't indicate what the space for a
"typical" install is. But I would guess about 1.5GB of space. Many distros
take that much space as the "typical" includes full developer support for
console and X. It contains most server services. And generally would
represent a winblows install with all the macroslop dev software and other
server products.
I would recomend the first order be to trim back from a spoon fed
install. It takes a long time to select what you want, but you don't end
up with many things you wont need and actually represent a security risk
since they may run with some default config you are unaware of.

You can install emacs. ... When I installed it, I installed
a ap d des e f k n t tcl y
I also installed x and xap but not xd. ... But you don't necessarily
need x and xap. All of that should fit in under 850M.

Yes, that's correct for a full install. However, you can do a very basic install around under 100 Mb. After all, that's what zipslack does.

As far as I know, there are several projects under way to develop an x
speech server. So far though, no useable results.

I can't say for sure until I get to go home this weekend and check out my
Linux partition usage, but I think a full install (x, gnome, development
packages, the WHOLE works) is around 1.8 Gb. That's for 7.1. But again,
don't quote me on that just yet.
