I hate to ask this here, but please have a little mercy on me.
I had a windows 98 partition and then I installed Linux behind it.
Now windows 98 as it likes to do, has killed itself. Yeah, no blue screen
here, but no a black screen with a little cursor. In any case I tried
installing the evil thing again, but once you get to the point where it
starts copying stuff the the drive it needs to perform the installation,
it hangs.
Now, I suspect, but have not tried to test this theory, but it must have
something to do with the fact that old bloatware is no longer in the mbr,
but instead lilo is.
So, this might be the cause of the problem.
So, could anyone confirm this? I really hate to do anything that would
mess up my perfect Linux partition.
I really hate to say this, but until there's a talking X server, I need
windows for my online banking and a few other but very few apps.
My wife though uses Gnome but she's sighted so speech isn't a problem for
her.
Ay, she's even getting the hang of it. I got my sister pretty well
converted as well. Yes!!!!
Ok, so what I propose to do is run fdisk -MBR and reset the mbr, then
install the evil thing, then use a boot floppy to bring up Linux, and then
re-run lilo.
Do you all think this would do the job?
Has anyone ever installed windows as a secondary os to Linux? I'd prefer
this really.
tnx

What you have suggested will make the MBR look normal again, but I don't
think it will solve your problem. The MBR is written to just before the
first reboot (after file copy). Based on your description I think it is
probably a problem with your real mode cd driver. I would suggest you copy
the files in the win98 directory to the hard drive and run setup from
there. You can safely ignore copying the sub-directories to win98 on the
CD. They are just junk anyway.

Nothing is hard if you know the answer or are used to doing it.

Hi.
One thing you might want to take in to consideration is your drive space
after you repartitioned.
As you may or may not be aware, windows needs at least 500 mb of drive space
to install itself.
or alternately you could try getting a little proggy called win for lin.
I recently read a write up on it in pc user magazine and apparently, it runs
alot faster on the linux partition than it does on it's own native
partition.
This is due apparently to the file system that linux uses.
but take all this in to consideration and let us know how you get on..
Shaun

THanks, I am considering that program. I know the binary packages are for
RedHat ,b ut I run Slackware so want to get my hands on the source. If I
can and all goes well, then you can bet I'll be tossing that old M$
directory for good. I will be most interested if I can get my windows
screen reading software working so this will be a fun experiment.
thanks again.

Scott,
Is windows installed on a primary or extended partition. This makes a
difference. It should be installed on a primary partition. Once this is
done, it is my understanding that you can then tell lilo which OS to boot.
Have you looked into the talking X-Windows project. Keith Watson was
telling me about it this weekend. It is out of the UK and Matt Campbell has
done some work for this project. You may get information from Matt on where
to find it.
Finally, there is some howto's on multi-Os and linux and windows. Check out
both the howto and mini-howto pages for more information. I know that I
have read 1 such howto, that talks about having dos windows linux all boot
from 1 hard-drive.
HTH!
