This information goes out to those using Red Hat 6.2 and later. I have just found a quick and vary easy way to get your new Linux box up and talking after an install. I know it works well because I just did it, and it worked like a charm. Step 1: Install Red Hat to your machine, restart and make sure everything seams to be working ok, and to see if Lilo boots ok. Step 2: log in as root, and then insert your Red Hat installation diskette. Step 3: mount your floppy drive and switch over to the floppy. Step 4: enter the command cp vmlinuz /boot Step 5: Now answer y to the prompt to over right. Step 6: wait until the floppy stops. Step 7: enter the command Lilo. Step 8: after a few seconds enter the command shutdown -r now. After a minute your machine should come up talking like a charm. ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 6+ messages in thread

Bill, in Denver, has spent a lot of time getting the RedHat install and RPMS set-up for speakup and RedHat. I see no need to try and confuse the issue here. If it ain't broke, then don't break it! I guess I didn't specify which boot disk I was using. I was talking about the talking boot disk. I used the talking Red hat 7 install to get Red hat 7 on my machine, and then once the machine was installed I copied the talking Kernel from the talking setup to /boot, and then ran Lilo. If you don't like the Kernel you can always recompile a new one which I will today. I was just giving some tips. I leave it up to the judgement of the members of this list to make up there minds weather the info is useful or not. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephen Dawes" <sdawes@gov.calgary.ab.ca> To: <speakup@braille.uwo.ca> Sent: Tuesday, February 06, 2001 9:35 AM Subject: RE: Instructions for installing Kernels. > Why not use the reRedHat talking install. At least, that is how I understood it, based on what Bill was telling me. Meaning, that once the install is complete, everything is up and running, or should I say Talking. Bill, perhaps, you could clear the muddy water on this one. Admittedly, I could be wrong, and if so, I apologize for any confusion I may have caused the list. On the other hand, if I understood Bill correctly, the way in which I mentioned, would be a whole lot easier. Stephen Dawes B.A. B.Sc. Web Business Office, The City of Calgary PHONE: (403) 268-5527. * RE: Instructions for installing Kernels. ` Stephen Dawes @ ` Kirk Wood 0 siblings, 0 replies; 6+ messages in thread From: Kirk Wood @ UTC (permalink / raw) To: speakup I am confused as to what the problem in expanding the kernal again. Given that this takes all of 2 or 3 minutes if you have a slow processor. If you wanted to keep the old source, then just use different names for the cource trees and change the softlink linux to the correct one. I suppose someone can come up with a much more convoluted means, but I figure that it is much easier to just follow the directions given. ======= Kirk Wood Cpt.Kirk@1tree.net Nothing is hard if you know the answer or are used to doing it. ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 6+ messages in thread

If you do that, you won't be able to load any modules. I have some RPM files that you can install. Bill in Denver On Tue, 6 Feb 2001, Thomas Ward wrote: > Hello, list.
