list guidelines

ok... do you all mind using the default char set? i hate reading that message about invalid char set - some chars may be displayed
incorrectly. i use pine. it's sorta a bug. and what is a good term software to use
with linux? the one i have skips lines and does wierd stuff with the screen.

Yours is one of those that comes up with the wrong character set.  So this
means that since you are using outlook express you are either sending html
or rich text messages.

While he is using Outlook Express ver 5.5 he is NOT sending html or rich
text. In fact, for the record, if you are not using the same character
set, you are most likely the person who is non-compliant with RFC
standards. Chances are you are using an older version of Pine.

I am using the same chacter set. And it is the default. But I have a
fairly recent version of Pine. Pine was first written before extended
character sets were common. But with the internationalization of the
internet the need for characters outside our precious English language
were needed. This gave rise to the extended character sets. In essense it
starts with plain ascii and adds charcters needed (or desired) for a given
region. These also coincide with the country code pages if you have seen
some settings for that.

Again, if you are recieving the message regularly you are probably the one
who is NOT folling the RFC on the subject (sorry but the exact number
exscapes me right now). You (probably) can change this. If you can't you
really should consider upgrading your version of Pine. There are other
neat features that have been added as well.

In the configuration section of the setup menu you will find a variable
called character-set. Set it to "iso-8859-1" and the instances of a
different character set will drop noticeably.

I think that some folks can't help it if their mail cleint sends the wrong
set.  I do know however that if someone is sending out html messages as
the ones done by outlook express by default it will give you that message.
I use pine as well but for the most part the messages read fine.

Hi:

Actually, this is one of the things that currently annoys me about pine,
that being its decision to show you the HTML version of a message sent in
both formats.  At least up till pine 4.21, this was not configurable.

What type of term inal  connections are you doing?  Do you want to use a
dialup terminal with a modem? Telnet, ssh?  What are you trying to do?

Actually it is NOT a bug. Unlike some programs that give you no notice
that you may not get all characters correct, Pine notifies you. It is done
on purpose. Now it might be nice to be able to disable this, but since it
was designed in, it is not a bug. Something you may wish to do though is
change your default character set. This is found in Setup, then Config. It
is pretty far down the list and is character-set. It appears after all the
sort settings. I would recoment you set it to iso-8859-1. This should
eliminate most of the messages. (I almost never see the message.)

Hi:

Setting the charset to iso-8859-1 will kill off most of the charset
wornings.  Occasionally you'll see messages written in the windows-1212
charset (or something like that) which you'll just have to put up with, but
it's not very common up here (wonder why).

As for terminals, I presume you mean from windows to linux over a LAN or
something.  I've found hyperterminal private edition (from
www.hilgraeve.com) to work pretty well most of the time, with a few
anomolies (like it wants to be the first AP opened after a reboot).  I've
used it with JFW and it uses the same scripts the built-in hyperterminal
uses.  Your mileage may vary with other screen readers.
