installed rh 6.2 from talking bootdisk, but it's kernel refuses to work properly when copied in from the bootdisk

			I was installing rh 6.2 yesterday from a CD I got from cheapbytes.com. I
got the thing installed all the way, and it rebooted. When linux loaded it
didn't come talking. The keymap fails to load. When I got in and replaced
the kernel with that found on the boot disk, and rebooted, I got speech but
tons of errors, and ppp gave error can't open ppp0, error 4. Loading the
module gives unresolved symbols. I still have zipspeak around here yet, how
should I fix this so things come up like they should? How do I change the
default operating system to boot, as lilo put linux first, is there a cut
and paste console utility to do this?

This sounds like a similar problem I had, the only difference being that I
was unable to completely make a new kernel.  I'm thinking there's a bug in
6.2's software.  Maybe they have shipped bad cd's.  As a result, the $80 I
spent on Redhat is more or less used as an expensive manual for commands.
If I were you, I'd go back to zipspeak for the time being.

Wow, the CD installed fine, just that ppp doesn't work. It complains about
nfs and other things I don't need too.
I only spent $10.00, not too bad.

Bad cds aren't your problem there.
Here's the reason for this.

When you install off the boot disk there's a specific set of modules that are used and when your machine reboots in to the default red hat kernel there's no speech because the kernel that gets dropped on to the system isn't one with speech.
So the way you fix this problem is to redo the kernel and install a custom one yourself.
The RH expert Bill knows a little more about this than I do.

I've tried using the same kernel off the bootdisk, and it won't work. You
mean, rh compiles up a kernel while it installs itself? I thought I'd be
all right just copying the bootdisk kernel to /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0, or
even booting with the kernel with loadlin, neither one allows ppp to work.

Did that last night, got to use eznet to connect to the net as I still have
gotten the not 8 bit clean connection when using rh's ppp method. I didn't
recompile the modules though, as him and I will be working on updating
stuff eventually.

Your not 8-bit clean messages come from a broken chat script. You aren't doing
the chat script correctly enough to get you onto the isp. sadly 90% ofppp problems
related to ppp not working are user generated.

So there's a defect in the redhat 6.2 CD's because you can't use the
install kernel to run the system.  Very interesting logic

hmmmm.  OK, does it actually end up booting or does it grind to a halt?  I
would have thought that you'd need to do a rdev on the kernel so that it
would use the hard drive as the root device as opposed to the floppy, but
I've never used redhat.  You out there, Bill?

No, it boots, having dad help me the first time, the nonspeakup kernel it
installed booted, but the speakup kernel gives errors, and gives a message
saying enter root password for maintenance or press ctrl-d to start
normally. Pressing that says automatic reboot in progress, and it does so.
This was using loadlin with the kernel of the rh boot disk. When I try to
mount once I get to maintenance mode, it says /dev/fd0, wrong major or
minor number. It does this with any partition I choose to mount, including
my dos one.

This is the exact error I was having atempting to mount disk drives.  Let me
guess, the kernel that boots is version 2.2.1450.

The rdev setting is only used in the kernel image when none is given to the
kernel by loadlin lilo grub silo or another loader. The rdev bytes in the kernel
are for if you bring the kernel up off a floppy with no boot loader it knows
what the default root device is.

You can't bring the kernel up this way from the hard drive, if linux were
the only OS, could you?
