Hi all,
A couple of install questions. First I installed Redhat 6.2 on my system
using the speakup boot disk. It went ok, except I goofed when it asked me
for a keyboard, and I didn't use the speakup.map keyboard. I chose RO. I
hope that this is my only problem, because I am not aware if speakup is
supposed to be installed to the hard drive when using a boot disk with it on
it or if I still have to go get the source and compile a kernel. I am
assuming the latter, because when I boot into linux, the braille and speak
just gives me a slight bit of jiberish for a few seconds and then is silent.
Any help on this would be appreciated, and some idea what I would need for
the kernel would be helpful also, what I mean by that statement is that if
there's already a basic kernel that is pre-compiled that I can just download
and copy to the hard drive where I need it I would grately appreciate it. I
am very new to the whole linux environment, and at present the kernel
documentation is confusing me. Again any help would be useful.
Thanks in advance
Chris Schulte

Hi Chris,
I didn't understand if you had a boot disk with Speakup on it, or are
you booting with the stock kernel that comes with RedHat. By any chance
does the gibberish sound like the word "at"?? If so, speakup probably
isn't finding your synth and the "at" you're hearing is kudzu trying to
find out if there's a modem on the port where your synthesizer is. The
easiest way to fix the keymap problem is to type from the prompt as
root: chkconfig --level 2345 keytable off
Any questions call or write. Calling will usually get a quicker
response.
HTH.

Personally I turn kudzu off untill I am ready to add a card. It takes up
to two seconds to look for new hardware every boot. I rarely add or change
my hardware so it seems superfolous to me to have it run.
In RedHat this is easy to turn on and off. As root run setup. Then arrow
down to system services and hit enter. Here you can turn services on and
off.

Well, first of all, in reply to Bill's question, I did use a speakup boot
disk for the install of linux. Second, I don't know if kudzu is running, I
assume so because it sounds like something that is turned on by default.
Thirdly, the advice I was given here was that Linux was looking for a modem
on com one. This is probably true because the word at appears on the
braille display. I am using a braille lite forty and not a braille and
speak. It is just running with speech on and in speech box mode. so, I'm
assuming that linux is looking on com one for a modem. How do I set it up
to see the braille lite, and is it worth it to do now because I don't even
know if I have speakup installed as a part of my kernel. As I said
previously, I don't think so, because I was using a speakup boot disk, but I
don't know if what you use for a kernel on the boot disk gets installed as
part of the kernel on your hard drive. Again please help!! I am definitely
new to this, actually, most of the things discussed on this list are over my
head, but I figure I'll learn someday.
Thanks again:
Chris Schulte

Hi Chris,
If you want to send me an email, that would be better. I will give you my
phone number or something, because there is no way to explain this easily.
You will probibly want to be walked through things, as there is no way to
easily anticipate everything that may happen. My email address is
jasoncuster@home.com. I have lots of experience using my braille 'n speak
and linux, and we probibly can get it worked out. Good luck,
Jason

Hey folks. I have a question. I know how to configure my Linux box to work over cable modem and dsl provided dhcp functioning. However what i am not
able to find is documentation on configuring Linux to work over DSL if the method is using pppoe. Can someone point me in the right direction? Or tell me?
Thanks.

Hi Raul:
The man who knows everything, Kirk Reiser, uses a DSL over PPPOE setup at
home. He's currently away getting a new doggie, but he'll be back on
Thursday.

Well, there's no way I can live up to that reputation but thanx
anyway. I recommend you get the roaring penguin pppoe package. I
believe it can be found at www.roaringpenguin.com. It has a set of
good docs and I believe the newer version have fairly good
configuration scripts. I'm still using a very old version but it
works well and is certainly reliable.

Look for the dsl howto. It is at
ftp://ftp.metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/docs/HOWTO. I don't remember the
exact file name.

Hi,
I will be using a 400 p2, 128 meg, two hard drives, with Dec Talk Express.
Hard drive one, has JFW 4, Vocal-eyes, and Win98.
I have cleaned off hard drive two. It is a 4 gig.
I plan to partition hd2 into 4 partitions
1 for home, 2 swap, 3 user, 4 backup.
I have many questions.
Is there a text file, that I can read that will answer the following ?
1. At what point will Speak up start talking ?
2. What is the order, of the disks that I will be using,
I.e.: witch is the one that will speak first.
3. Will fdisk speak in Linux.
I have wanted to learn Linux for a long time, and think that it is great that you have taken the time to make this available.
Thanks
