I was told about a mechanism called laplink that would hook a desktop to a
laptop. The problem with it seems to be that it needs both a serial and
parallel port connection on both machines. I have a serial port free on the
desktop, parallel is taken by the printer, not so serious a problem
necessarily, but the laptop's serial port is taken by the dectalk express,
something I can't do without, as I have to know what's on the screen to
tell it to transfer, and to know when it completes. I have a modem in one
pcm slot, and something else in the other, not sure why it's there. Is
there a way to get a third slot, so I can put in another serial port to
satisfy laplink, and is it necessary to use the serial connection at all?

Laplink require either a serial port or a parrelel port on each machine
(but not both at the same time). You can not, however, use serial on one
machine and parallel on another.
If you are going to do this often, you can get a switch box to go back and
forth between the printer and laplink. Also, you only need speech working
with one of the two machines.
Incedently, you can also transfer files with the software built into
Windows. You just have to install "direct cable connection." You can find
it in the add/remove programs on the windows setup tab. (No I won't give
you instructions though. You can however look at the help file. Same with
more info on laplink.)

Will plip work the same way? I was thinking plip would be easiest
especially if I do get linux on my laptop (kind of hard to use speakup
without a numpad though)

To which Kirk just decided to make up the following answer with no basis
in reality:
It will work exactly like it but different and a sort of configuration
with the what-not attached to the whosit. You may need to modify the
config file if you want this all to take place auto-majically but it can
certainly be done. What ever you do, don't read the manual though. It is
much more effecient to ask others.

I have a numpad for my laptop. It pluggs into the keyboard port and all it is is just the 10-key pad. This makes it easy to use screen readers whether it's in
windows, dos or linux and the laptop. No funky fn key to mess with.
